Students Pay to Change to Popular Majors

For most students in universities, 20,000 yuan is a big sum. But Xiao Wang paid the money soon after she learned that she could change to the popular Economics Department.

By paying 20,000 yuan with the help of her parents, Xiao Wang can study the economics major she prefers. "It is difficult for graduates in chemistry to find a good job in recent years." she said. Xiao Wang is only one of the many freshmen that pay to change to popular majors.

Many universities throughout China offer similar services. The charges for changing majors are from 5,000 yuan to 80,000 yuan, according to a recent re- port on the Yangzi Evening News. The fee(费用)is decided by university authorities based on the popularity of each major, the report said. The most popular majors include computer sci- ence, law, finance(金融), information engineering and for- eign languages. A saying popular among students may explain the phenomenon (现象). Studying a good major is much better than studying in a famous university.

Some educators warn students against rushing blindly to today' s popular majors. They may not be popular years later, the China Youth Daily said. But it seems that many students are career oriented(以职业为宗旨), instead of being interestbased.

Freshmen are allowed to change to other departments, according to roles of the Ministry of Education. But there are no official rules on the charges. In spite of the high charges, demands to change majors are still increasing. The paper said about 100 students in the English language department of a school in Harbin changed from other departments. The depart- ment planned to admit only 50 freshmen this year.

These charges have become a big income for some univer- sities, the paper said. It is expected a normal school in Harbin will get an income of 30 million yuan this year.

A machine which makes water out of air could become the greatest household invention since the microwave.

Using the same technology as a dehumidifier (除湿器),

the Water Mill is able to create a ready supply of drinking

water by getting it from a limitless source-the air.

The company behind the machine says not only does

it offer all alterative to bottled water in developed

countries, but it is a solution for the millions who face a

  daily water shortage.

The machine works by drawing in damp air through a

filter(过滤器) and over a cooling element which changes it into water

droplets. It can produce up to 12 liters a day.The Water Mill will also produce more water when storms pass over, as the humidity(湿度)in the air increases. In keeping with its ecodevelopment, the machine uses the same amount of electricity as three light bulbs.

Inventor Jonathan Ritchey said:“The demand for water is off the chart.People are looking

for freedom from water distribution systems that are shaky and unreliable”.

The machine, which is about 3 feet wide,is likely to cost£800 when it goes on sale here in the spring. Its maker, Canadian firm Element Four, estimates(估计)that a liter of water will cost around 20 pence to produce.

Environmentalists claim half the world’s population will face water shortage because of climate change by 2080.One in five humans is said to lack access to safe drinking water.

Just as the stock(股票)market rises and falls in response to what people are willing to put their money behind,we have inside ourselves an inner economy that rises and falls in response to our beliefs about what is possible.Sometimes the degree to which we are willing to challenge our belief systems determines the success of our inner economy. For example, imagine that your family of origin had a belief that musical talent was not something they possessed. As a member of that group, you would likely hold that the same belief about yourself. As a result, even if you had a great desire to create music, you might be hesitant to really get behind yourself, fearing that your investment(投资)would not pay off.Even if you had the courage to follow your passion, your inner belief that you are not born talented would probably be a major obstacle to investing your energy in your dream.

On the other hand, if you found a way to release that negative belief, a great flood of energy would pour forth, greatly increasing the likelihood of your success. How much energy we are willing to invest in the various ideas, dreams, and visions we carry within is like the money people are,or are not, willing to invest in the various products available for trade on the stock market. And in both cases, belief plays a key role in determining how willing we are to get behind something. One way to open up the possibility for greater success in our inner economies is to understand that belief is not the reliable guide we sometimes think. There are other more reliable things of success that we can put our faith in,such as passion, feeling, and sense. Some of the most successful investors in the stock market are the ones that go against the grain, trusting their sense over the common opinion held by common people about what will work.

In the same way, we can learn to trust our heart’s desires and our sense to guide us, questioning any beliefs that stand in the way of our ability to fully invest in ourselves. As we take our energy from limiting ideas about what is possible,we free up the resources that have the power to make our inner economy prosper.

49.We can safely conclude from the first paragraph that

  .

  A.our belief is not reliable

B.belief is not so important in our success

C.belief is an obstacle to our success

D.our belief determines our success in some way

50.According to the passage,if a family of origin has passion for literature, the members of the

  family will probably

  A.write poems

  B.hate literature

  C.enter the field of literature

  D. teach literature

51.We can put our faith in the following things of success except

  .

  A.passion

  B.feeling

  C.sense

  D.stock market

52.The purpose of the author is

  .

  A.to teach us a lesson

B.to give us some useful suggestions

C.to encourage us to invest in the stock market

D.to tell us common people have negative beliefs

Misery and setbacks are not always as terrible as one imagines. Hard times can offer new ways of looking at life that would otherwise never be known. And, if you are a writer, this can be the source of much of your success.

Popular British author, Charles Dickens’(1812-1870)family could hardly make ends meet. They could only afford to send one of their six children to school. Dickens was not that child. His parents chose to send a daughter, who had a talent for music, to an academy. Then at the age of 12, Dickens' life took another turn for the worse.

His father, a clerk, was placed in prison for unpaid debts. And, being the oldest male left at home, Dickens took up work at a factory. His horrible experience there became the fuel for his future writing. His father was freed three months later and inherited a small amount of money. Dickens was then sent to school.

From 1836 to 1837, he wrote a monthly series of stories. Thus the Pickwick Papers, came into being, which brought fame to the 23-year-old man.

Throughout his career, Dickens covers various situations in his novels. He wrote about the miserable lives of the poor in Oliver Twist, the French Revolution in Tale of Two Cities, and social reform in Hard Times. He also wrote David Copperfield, a book thought to be modeled on his own life.

“I do not write bitterly or angrily: for I know all these things have worked together to make me what I am,” he once said. His difficult childhood did indeed shape the person he became, as well as his writing career. There are shades of young Dickens in many of his most beloved characters, including David Copperfield and Oliver Twist.

Like the author, all these characters come from poor beginnings and are able to rise above their setbacks and achieve success. “Minds, like bodies, will often fall into an ill-conditioned state from too much comfort,” he once wrote. On June 9th, 1870, aged 58, Dickens died, leaving one unfinished work. The words on his tombstone read: “He was a sympathizer to the poor, the suffering and the oppressed, and by his death, one of England's greatest writers is lost to the world.”

53.The book that first called public attention to Dickens was ______.

  A.the Pickwick Papers

  B.Oliver Twist

  C.Tale of Two Cities

  D.David Copperfield

54.The underlined word “shades” in the passage means “_____”.

  A.symbols

  B.examples C.D.reminders

55.How did Dickens see his childhood?

  A.He felt grateful for it.

B.He felt it a pity that things weren’t in his favor.

  C.He loved writing about it.

D.He chose to forget the bitterness about it.

56.From the story, we can see Dickens’ attitude towards a hard life is ______.

  A.to it up

  B.to hate itC.

  D.to

The past ages of man have all been carefully labeled(贴…标签) by anthropologists (人类学家). Descriptions like "Palaeolithic Man". "Neolithic Man",etc. neatly sum up whole periods. When the time comes for anthropologists to turn their attention to the twentieth century, they will surely choose the label" Legless Man". Histories of the time will go something like this: "in the twentieth century, people forgot how to use their legs. Men and women moved about in cars, buses and trains from a very early age. There were lifts in all large buildings to prevent people from walking. And the surprising thing is that they didn't use their legs even when they went on holiday.

The future history books might also record that we were deprived (剥夺) of the use of our eyes. In our hurry to get from one place to another, we failed to see anything on the way. Air travel gives you a bird's-eye view of the world. When you travel by car or train, an unclear picture of the countryside constantly dirties the windows. Car drivers, especially, are mixed with the urge to go on and on: they never want to stop. The typical twentieth-century traveler is the man who always says" I've been there. "You mention the farthest, and someone is sure to say "I've been there"—meaning, "I drove through it at 100 miles an hour on the way to somewhere else. "

When you travel at high speeds, the present means nothing: you live mainly in the future because you spend most of your time looking forward to arriving at some other place. But actual arrival, when it is achieved, is meaningless. You want to move on again. By traveling like this, you

won’t experience anything. The traveler on foot, on the other hand, lives constantly in the present.

For him traveling and arriving are one and the same thing: he arrives somewhere with every step he makes. He experiences the present moment with his eyes, his ears and the whole of his body. At the end of his journey he feels a delicious physical tiredness. He knows that sound, satisfying sleep will be his: the just reward of all true travelers.

57.What's the best title of the passage?

  A.The advantages of travel

  B.The best way to travel

  C.The reward of true travel

  D.Possible ways to travel

58.Anthorpologists label man nowadays "Legless" because______.

A.people forget how to use their legs

  B.lifts prevent people from walking

  C.modern vehicles have replaced walking

D.people prefer cars, buses and trains

59.The author says "we are deprived of the use of our eyes "because ______.

A.people can't get a clear picture of the view along

B.eyes become useless in traveling at high speed

C.people want to sleep during travelling

  D.people won't use their eyes

60.What does the author intend to tell us?

  A.Legs become weaker.

B.There is no need to use legs or eyes.

C.Modern means of transportation make the world a small place.

D.We should experience the present heart and soul while traveling.
