Since the Second World War,there has been an obvious trend, especially among the growing group of college students, toward early marriage. Many youths begin dating in the first stage of adolescence, "go steady" through high school, and marry before their formal education has been completed. In some quarters, there is much shaking of graying heads over the unacceptable ways of youth. However, emotional (情感的)maturity does not grow with age; it does not arrive automatically at twenty -one or twenty-five. Some achieve it surprisingly early, while others never do, even in three-score years and ten.

Many students are marrying as an escape, not only from an unsatisfying home life, but also from their own personal problems of loneliness. However, any marriage 'entered into as an escape cannot prove entirely successful. The sad fact is that marriage seldom solves one' s problems ; more often,it merely worsens them. What ’ s more,it is doubtful whether the home is able to carry all that the young are seeking; they might abandon one idol(幻像)only to have another. Young people correctly understand that their parents are wrong in believing that success is the most important in life, but they themselves are wrong in believing that they have found the true center of life' s meaning. Their expectations of marriage are basically unrealistic and therefore can not be met. They want too much, and tragic disillusionment(幻想破灭)is often likely to follow.

Shall we, then, join the chorus of those against early marriages? One cannot generalize: all early marriages are bad and all later ones are good. Satisfactory marriages are determined not by how old one is, but by the emotional maturity of the partners. Therefore, each case must be judged on its own benefits. If the early marriage is not an escape, if it is entered into with

relatively few false expectations, and if it is economically workable, why not? Good marriages can be made from sixteen to sixty, and so can bad ones.

It is six o’clock in the morning. You are asleep in my left arm and I am learning the art of one-handed typing. Your mother, more tired yet more happy than I’ve ever known her, is sound asleep in the room next door.

When you’re older we’ll tell you that you were born in Hong Kong in the lunar year of the pig. “It's a boy, so lucky,” our neighbours told us. They said you were the first baby to be born in the block this year. This, they told us, was good Feng Shui, in other words, a positive sign. Naturally your mother and I were only too happy to believe that.

Your coming has turned me upside down and inside out. I am pained by the memory of each suffering child I have come across on my journeys as a journalist. To tell you the truth, it’s nearly too much for me to even think of the children being hurt and abused and killed.

Last October, in Afghanistan, when you were growing inside your mother, I met Sharja, aged twelve, motherless, fatherless, guiding me through the grey ruins of her home. Everything was gone, she told me.

There is another memory of Rwanda, and the churchyard where I found a mother and her three young children huddled(蜷缩) together where they’d been beaten to death. The children had died holding on to their mother.

Daniel, these memories explain some of the protectiveness I feel for you, and the occasional moments of blind terror when I imagine anything bad happening to you.

56.We can see that this text is written to ________.

  A.the author’s wife

  B.the author’s neighbour

  C.Daniel

  D.a suffering childD

57.The author mentions some of his painful memories because ________.

A.he wants his son to care for others

B.he feels more pain thinking about them as a father

C.he hopes to forget the tragedies he witnessed

D.his experience has affected his mental health

58.The underlined word “blind” in the last paragraph means ________.

  A.unable to see

  B.meaningful

  C.not clear

  D.not based on reasonD

59.Which of the following words best describes the author’s feeling when typing this text?

  A.Relieved.

  B.Regretful. C.Loving.

  D.Calm.D

"Choo, Choo!" Here comes the Chunnel train. Get aboard if you want to learn more about this underground transportation system. This is an unusual form of transportation, because it is a tunnel that trains travel through and not an actual form of transportation.

The Chunnel is actually the English nickname for the Channel Tunnel. In French, it is called le tunnel sous la Manche. It is a rail tunnel beneath the English Channel at the Straits of Dover. It connects Cheriton in Kent, England with Sangatte in northern France. It is the second longest rail tunnel in the world.

Did you know that the British and the French had a race whi1e they were building the Chunnel? The race was to see who could get to the middle of the tunnel first. The British won

by a little bit. It took 15,000 workers over seven years to dig the tunnel. The tunnel was

  finished in 1994.

The completed Chunnel cost about $ 21 billion. But it all paid off, because it became very popular, very quick. Millions of people use it. Now it is getting even more popular.

There are three complete tunnels in the Chunnel. The two outside ones are the passenger trains. The small inner one is a guidance train. The guidance train is not used for transportation. Each track is exactly parallel to each other.

There are four different train systems in the Chunnel. The Eurostar is a high speed passenger service that connects London, Paris, Brussels, and Lille. The Eurotunnel shuttle is a rail ferry service. These shuttles carry cars and vans. These are railcars that allow drivers to drive their vehicles on and off. There are also two Eurotunnel goods service trains.

George, when your big brother and your little dog and I walked you up to schools today, you had no idea how I was feeling.

You were so excited. You had packed and unpacked your pencils and safety scissors in your backpack a dozen times.I am really going to miss those lazy mornings when we waved your brother and sister off to school.

Because you are my youngest, I had learned a few things by the time you came along.I found out that the seemingly endless days of babyhood are gone like lightning.I blinked(眨眼), and your older siblings were setting off for school as eagerly as you did this morning, I was one of the lucky ones; I could choose whether to work or not.By the time it was your turn, the shining prizes of career advancement and a double income had lost their brightness.A splash(溅水) in the pool with you in your bright red boots or "just one more" rereading of your favorite book, Frog and Toad Are Friends, meant more. You didn't go to preschool and I hope that doesn't hold you back. You learned numbers by helping me count the soda cans we returned to the store.

I have to admit that in my mind's eye, an image of myself while you're in school has developed, I see myself updating all the photo albums and starting that novel I always wanted to write. As the summer wound down and more frequent quarrels erupted between you and your siblings, I was looking forward to today. And then this morning, I walked you up the steep hill to your classroom. You found the coat hook with your name above it right away, and you gave me one of your characteristically fierce, too-tight hugs. This time you were ready to let go before I was.

Maybe someday you will deliver a kindergartner to the first day of school. When you turn at the door to wave good-bye, he or she will be too deep in conversation with a new friend to notice.Even as you smile, you'll feel something warm on your cheek.

  And then, you’ll know…

Getting your teen to think beyond his own immediate needs can be more difficult than cracking a nut with a plastic fork. But don't worry. It's not impossible. There are many ways to encourage your teen to care about those outside his immediate circle of friends. As he begins to have responsibility towards others, he will realize he feels even better about himself.

"Teens are thinking about career, college, and what their future might look like," explains Michelle Maidenberg, a clinical director of Westchester Group Works, a center for group treatment in New York."This is very challenging and just one of the reasons why they are so focused on their own world." Once teens participate h community service, however, they begin to look beyond their personal needs. They also learn firsthand about the challenges others face, and they experience a sense of authority as they realize they can make a real difference in others' lives.

Not sure how to convince a teen to get away from the cell phone and into a community project? Teens buy into community service when the project or program is in an area of their interest.

"Finding something in an area of interest for them keeps them motivated and inspired," Maidenberg says. For instance, if he is interested in culinary (烹饪) school, he could volunteer in a soup kitchen or bake for a project that supports families in need.Volunteer projects in your teen's area of interest will build her knowledge base as well as help others.

Parents can do their part by participating in community service themselves.Teens can learn directly from their parents that personal enjoyment is not ,all that matters.

Let teens know the benefits they will obtain.“Give them every reason in the world to volunteer," Maidenberg advises. She says that working on community service projects builds confidence."By working with others, teens improve managerial, interpersonal and communication skills.Community service helps to approach maturity when they take a step back to see the needs of other people," she adds.Another reward: service hours look great on a resume!

64.According to Michelle Maidenberg, it's hard to get teens to think beyond their own immediate needs partly because ___

  ___.

A.they care more about their circle of friends

B.they have no interest in doing anything

C.they have to work hard for college

  D.they are facing many challenges
