  2016高考英语二轮阅读理解精选(23)及答案

  A

Once when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. One family between us and the ticket counter made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12. The children were standing in line, two-by- two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly jabbering about the clowns(小丑), elephants and other acts they would see that night.

The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, "Please let me buy eight children's tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus."

The ticket lady told him the price. The wife's head dropped, and the man leaned a little closer and asked, "How much did you say?"

The ticket lady again told him the price.

The man didn't have enough money. How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight kids that he didn't have enough money to take them to the circus?

Seeing what was going on, my dad put his hand into his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground. (We were not wealthy in any sense of the word!) My father reached down, picked up the bill, tapped the man on the shoulder and said, "Excuse me, sir, this fell out of your pocket."

The man knew what was going on. He wasn't begging for money but certainly appreciated the help in a difficult, embarrassing situation. He looked straight into my dad's eyes, took my dad's hand in both of his, and he replied, "Thank you, thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family."

My father and I went back to our car and drove home. We didn't go to the circus that night, but we didn't go without.

  The British Museum

Located in the Bloomsbury area of London, the British Museum is the location of a national collection of science and art treasures. It first began in 1753 when Parliament purchased the collection of Sir Hans Sloane and a collection from Sir Robert Cotton along with Sir Robert Harley's Library. First opened to the public in 1759 in Montague House, it was later moved to its present location, being built in stages from 1823. The famous Reading Room was built in 1857 and is now part of the glassed-in Great Court.

The British Museum aims to "illuminate(照亮)the histories of cultures for the benefit of present and future generations". Thus, the number and subject of the exhibits and galleries are vast. Ranging from Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, and back to pre-historic times, they highlight more than just Britain. A visit to the Museum is a visit through the centuries of mankind and what he has left behind of himself.

4th to 20th century European art and archaeology collections illustrate cultures of the time. Items from the famous Anglo-Saxon Sutton Hoo burial are of particular interest. Sutton Hoo, located in East Suffolk, contained 11 barrows(坟墓)and the remains of a Saxon ship complete with gold and silver treasures.

A "talking kitchen" teaches students how to cook French and speak French. Researchers at New Castle University in the United Kingdom have developed the French Digital Kitchen. Professors Paul Seedhouse and Patrick Olivier led the project. Professor Seedhouse told us that it works like a satellite navigation(导航)systemin a car.

The kitchen equipment and tools use motion sensor(动作传感器)technology. The sensors help a computer guide the students through instructions in French.

The system can tell whether you've done what you were asked to do or not. For example, the system tells you to take some butter and cut it with a knife. There's a sensor on the package containing the butter so it can tell where the butter's being moved. The sensor in the knife not only knows that the knife is moving, but it also knows what motion the knife is making. So it can know whether the knife is cutting or not. And it doesn't go on to the next step of the program unless you've done what it senses you've done.

Students can ask the computer to repeat the instructions or translate them into English. There are vocabulary lessons before and after the cooking.

Professor Seedhouse says the French Digital Kitchen turns the process of learning language into a real-life experience. "Here you're taking it out of the classroom and you're actually using the language to produce something which you can eat at the end of it. It's very enjoyable."

The system could be available for sale by the end of 2012. Adding the technology to a new kitchen could add about ten to twenty percent to the building costs. The researchers have also been given money to develop programs in six other languages, including English, Italian and Spanish.

The “talking kitchen” developed by New Castle University is mainly aimed at

  .

  A. helping students who love French foods

  B. helping house owners prepare their meals

  C. helping learners who study French as a foreign language

  D. helping housewives who want to learn cooking French foods

  A.what the system is

  B. how the system works

  C.what a motion sensor is

  D. how the system was invented

A suspected killer wolf caught by police is to be given a DNA test after a man said it was his pet dog, a husky.

The white animal was caught on March 23 at Nanshahe town in Tengzhou, Shandong province, and identified by a local zoo as a 5-year-old she-wolf.

Police believe it was responsible for attacks on seven people, two of whom died.

But a local man surnamed Wang claimed it was his pet dog Lady that he had reared for two years, and who was gentle in nature.

"We have invited experts from some universities in Shandong, and they will professionally determine whether it's a wolf or a dog," a wildlife protection officer said on Monday.

Xing Hao, a local zookeeper, told reporters: "Its cry is like that of a wolf. Its tail is also straight, not sticking up like a dog, and its ears are upright. All these indicators are in line with a wolf's characteristics."

But Wang disagreed. "It's not a wolf but my dog. I recognized her at a glance from a news photo," Wang told China Daily.

"Her name is Lady and she is very gentle. I have raised her for nearly two years. At around 11 am last Friday, she ran away from home and never came back."

Wang said he now works in another city in Shandong and was only told of events by friends on Friday night. "I recognize my Lady," he said. "I hope I can get my pet back as soon as possible. During her capture, she was hurt badly both physically and mentally. She's very scared of people," he claimed, relying on reports from family and friends who went to see the dog on Saturday."

Wang has contacted local police and the zoo. "It's quite understandable for local departments to do this, as they want to protect local people," Wang said.

The local police caught wolves because

  .

  A. they are a threat to people

  B. they are like a wild dog

  C. they attacked on other wild animals

  D. they are needed by a local zoo

We can know from the passage that

  .

  A. the animal was about 2 years old when it was captured.

  B. the animal had attacked altogether 2 people before it was captured.

  C. the man claimed that the captured animal had been raised for 2 years.

  D. the man claimed that the captured animal ran away from his home 2 years ago.

According to the report, which of the following is expected to happen?

  A. The captured animal will be killed.

  B. The captured animal will stay in a zoo.

  C. The captured animal will be sent back to its owner.

  D. The captured animal will receive an identification test.
