Horses help us achieve many of our aims.Girls can learn to develop responsibility, selfconfidence and personal connections in their lives while having fun.Using horses as a wonderful tool for education, our camps offer an interesting place for growth and learning.
Imagine each girl having her very own horse to spend time with and a best friend to love and take care of.Each camper is responsible for a horse for the week. Our riding program provides a lot of riding and lesson time.Campers will learn how to take care of the horse and the tack (马具), as well as how to ride.Days are filled with horserelated activities to strengthen the connection between each girl and horse, as the girls learn to work safely around the horses.
At Shadow Ridge we try to create a loving, caring family atmosphere for our campers. We have “The Bunkhouse”(4 girls), “The Wranglers Roost”(4 girls), and “The Hideout”(2 girls) in our comfortable 177yearold farm house. All meals are home cooked, offering delicious and healthy food for the hungry rider.
Our excellent activities create personalized memories of your child's vacation. Each child will receive a camp Tshirt and a photo album (usually 300-500 pictures) of their stay at camp.
Our camps are offered during June, July and August 2011, for small groups of girls aged 13-16 years, not only from Canada but also other parts of the world.

I first went to Harrow in the summer term. The school had the biggest swimming pool I had ever seen.It was a good joke to come up behind a naked boy, and push him into the pool.I made quite a habit of this with boys of my own size or less.
One day I saw a boy wrapped in a towel on the side of the pool.He was no bigger than I was, so I thought him a fair game.Coming secretly behind, I pushed him in, holding on to his towel so that it would not get wet, I was surprised to see an angry face come out from the water, and a being of great strength making its way by fierce strokes (猛力地划) to the shore.I fled, but in vain.He overtook me, seized me violently, and threw me into the deepest part of the pool.I soon climbed out on the other side, and found myself surrounded by a crowd of younger boys.“Do you know what you have done?” they said, “It's Amery; he is in Grade Six.He is champion at gym; he has got his football honor.”
I was frightened and felt ashamed. How could I tell his position when he was wrapped in a bath towel and so small. He didn't seem pleased at all, so I added in a most brilliant word, “My father,
who is a great man, is also small.” At this he laughed, and after some general words about my rude behavior and how I had better be careful in the future, signified the incident was closed.

Are you happy? Do you remember a time when you were happy? Are you seeking happiness today?
Many have sought a variety of sources for their feeling of happiness. Some have put their heart and efforts into their work.Too many turned to drugs and alcohol.Meanwhile, untold numbers have looked for it in the possession of expensive cars, exotic (异国的) vacation homes and other popular “toys”.Most of their efforts have a root in one common fact: people are looking for a lasting source of happiness.
Unfortunately, I believe that happiness escapes from many people because they misunderstand the journey of finding it.I have heard many people say that, “I'll be happy when I get my new promotion.” or “I'll be happy when I lose that extra 20 pounds.” It is dangerous because it accepts that happiness is a “response” to having, being or doing something.
In life, we all experience stimulus (激励) and response.Today, some people think that an expensive car is a stimulus.Happiness is a response.A great paying job is a stimulus.Happiness is a response. This belief leaves us thinking and feeling, “I'll be happy when...”
It has been my finding that actually the opposite is true.I believe that happiness is a stimulus and response is what life brings to those who are truly happy. When we are happy, we tend to have more success in our work. When we are happy, we more naturally take better care of our bodies and enjoy good health.Happiness is not a response but a stimulus.
Happiness is a conscious choice we make in daily life. For unknown reasons to me, many choose to be upset and angry most of the time.Happiness is not something that happens to us after we get something we want—we usually get things we want after we choose to be happy.
36.From the second paragraph, we know to many people ________.
A.they are not happy when they work hard
B.they are not happy when they drink or take drugs
C.they are happy when they possess their own expensive cars
D.they all desire exotic vacation homes
37.Generally speaking, most people feel happy because ________.
A.they think happiness is rooted in their deep hearts
B.they get what they want to have
C.they get a great paying job
D.they get an expensive car
38.In the author's opinion, which of the following is the most important if you want to be happy?
A.Losing weight.
B.An expensive car.
C.Success in work.
D.Feeling happy.
39.Which of the following is TRUE according to the author?
A.If you want to get what you want, you first choose to be happy.
B.We should try to get more and then we'll be happy.
C.Most people today are happy.
D.Work is a necessary part in our daily life.
40.From the viewpoint of the author, happiness is ________.
A.based on our needs
B.unconditional
C.out of reach
D.limited

Welcome to my Message Board!
Subject: Slimming down classics?
Mr.Handsome
2012212
6:34 AM Orion Books, which decides there is a market in creating cutdown classics (经典著作), is slimming down some novels by such great writers as L.Tolstoy, M.Mitchell and C.Bronte.Now, each of them has been whittled down to about 400 pages by cutting 30 to 40 pages percent of original, with words, sentences, paragraphs and, in a few cases, chapters removed. The first six shortened editions, all priced at £6.99 and advertised as great reads “in half the time”, will go on sale next month, with plans for 50 to 100 more to follow. The publishing house believes that modern readers will welcome the shorter versions.
Mr.Edwards
2012212
9:40 AM Well, I'm the publisher of Orion Group. Thanks for your attention, Mr.Handsome.I must say, the idea developed from a game of “shame” in my office. Each of us was required to confess (承认) to the most embarrassing blanks in his or her reading.I admitted that I had never read Anna Karenina and tried but failed to get through Gone with the Wind several times. One of my colleagues acknowledged skipping (跳读) Jane Eyre.We realized that life is too short to read all the books you want to and we never were going to read these ones.
As a leading publishing house, we are trying to make classics convenient for readers but it's not as if we're withdrawing the original versions. They are still there if you want to read them.
Ms.Weir
2012212
11:35 AM I'm the director of the online book club www.lovereading.co.uk.
Mr.Edwards, I think your shortened edition is a_breath_of_fresh_air.I'm guilty of never having read Anna Karenina, because it's just so long.I'd much rather read two 300page books than one 600page book.I am looking forward to more shortened classics!
Mr.Crockatt
2012212
4:38 PM I'm from the London independent bookshop Corckatt & Powell.
In my opinion, the practice is completely ridiculous. How can you edit the classics? I'm afraid reading some of these books is hard work, and that is why you have to develop as a reader. If people don't have time to read Anna Karenina, then fine. But don't read a shortened version and kid yourself it's the real thing.
41.According to the passage board, Orion Books ________.
A.opposes the reading of original classics
B.is embarrassed for cutting down classics
C.thinks cutdown classics have a bright future

A.make them easier to read
B.meet a large demand in the market

D.compete with their original versions
43.By describing the shortened classics as “a breath of fresh air”, Ms.Weir ________.
A.speaks highly of the cutdown classics
B.shows her love for original classics
C.feels guilty of not reading the classics
D.disapproves of shortening the classics
44.Mr.Crockatt seems to imply that
________.
A.reading the classic works is a confusing attempt
B.shortening the classics does harm to the original
C.publishing the cutdown classics is a difficult job
D.editing the classic works satisfies children's needs
45.How many classics are involved in the massage board?

About forty years ago, I was an instructor in the military college at Woolwich, when young Scoresby was given his first examination.I felt extremely sorry for him.Everybody answered the questions well, intelligently, while he did not know anything, so to speak. He was a nice, pleasant young man.It was painful to see him stand there and give answers that were wonders of stupidity.
I knew of course that when examined again he would fail and be thrown out.So, I said to myself, it would be a simple, harmless act to help him as much as I could.
I took him aside and found he knew a little about Julius Cesar's history. But he did not know anything else. So, I tested him and worked him like a slave.I made him work, over and over again, on a few questions about, which I knew he would be asked.
He came through very well on the day of the examination. He got high praise too, while others who knew a thousand more than he were sharply criticized!
I thought that what in the end would destroy him would be the mathematics examination.I decided to make his end as painless as possible. So, I pushed facts into his stupid head for hours. Finally, however, I was shocked out of my mind.He took the first prize! And he got the highest praise.

6.C extremely
come up to sb.
19.than 由better可知,应用比较连词than。
21.with 由be filled with可知,这里用with which引导定语从句。
22.where 表示“……
24.them 代指前面的new frontiers,作宾语,故填them。

A
Anna Karenina, Gone with the Wind和Jane Eyre三本经典著作。
46.F 关键信息“a lover of outdoor activities, especially tennis and sailing, French food”与F项中的“French cooking, many activities on offer, tennis, sailing”匹配。
47.D 关键信息“a 12yearold girl, go swimming, enjoy great movies at night, share a room with her parents, not too expensive”与D项中的“Up to 2 children under 14 can stay free when sharing a room with 2 adults, including indoor swimming pools and great movies in the rooms”匹配。
48.C 关键信息“curious about wild flowers and seabirds, near the sea”与C项中的“white Sandy beaches, wild flowers, soaring seabirds”匹配。
49.B 关键信息“her son who is fond of drama, sleep in a tent”与B项中的“can choose to sleep in a tent, offering drama performances”匹配。
50.A 关键信息“in a peaceful place near the sea, living in her own tent”与A项中的“a peaceful and calm place, beautiful beaches, can bring your own tent”匹配。
