As soon as the light in the bedroom went out, there was a big noise all through the farm buildings. Word had gone round during the day that old Major, the prize Middle White pig, had had a strange dream on the previous night and wished to communicate it to the other animals. It had been agreed that they should all meet in the big barn(谷仓) as soon as Mr.Jones was safely out of the way.Major lay on his bed of straw comfortably. He was twelve years old and had lately grown rather heavy, but he was still a nicelooking pig, with a wise and easygoing appearance. Before long the other animals began to arrive and make themselves comfortable after their different fashions. First came the three dogs, Bluebell, Jessie, and Pincher, and then the pigs, who settled down in the straw immediately beside Major. The two carthorses, Boxer and Clover, came in together, walking very slowly and setting down their vast hairy hoofs(蹄子) with great care for fear that there should be some small animals hidden in the straw. Clover was a motherly big horse approaching middle life, who had never quite got her figure back after her fourth kid.

Boxer was an enormous beast, nearly eighteen hands high, and as strong as any two ordinary horses put together. A white stripe down his nose gave him a somewhat stupid appearance, and in fact he was not of firstrate intelligence, but he was well respected for his steadiness of character and extraordinary abilities. After the horses came Benjamin, the donkey, Benjamin got angry easily. He seldom talked, and when he did, it was usually to make all such remarks—for instance, he would say that God had given him a tail to keep the flies off, but that he would rather have had no tail and no flies. Alone among the animals on the farm he never laughed. If asked why, he would say that he saw nothing to laugh at.

Ⅲ. [1]Surveys find that half of American teenagers are missing an average of up to 1.5 hours of sleep every school night.

[2]Surveys of American teenagers find that about half of them do not get enough sleep on school nights. They get an average of sixty to ninety minutes less than experts say they need.

[3]Experts say teens are biologically programmed to go to sleep later and wake up later than other age groups. Yet many schools start classes as early as seven in the morning.

[4]As a result, many students go to class feeling like sixteenyearold Danny. He is an active teen—except in the morning.[5]DANNY:“Getting up in the morning is pretty terrible. I'm just very out of it and tired. And through first and second period I can barely stay awake.”[6]Michael Breus is a clinical psychologist with a specialty in sleep disorders.

[7]Teens,he says, need to sleep eight to nine hours or even nine to ten hours a night. He says sleepy teens can experience a form of depression that could have big effects on their general wellbeing. It can affect not just their ability in the classroom but also on the sports field and on the road.

[8]So what can schools do about sleep students? The psychologist says one thing they can do is to ________ in the morning.

[9]Eric Peterson is the head of St.George's School in the northeastern state of Rhode Island. He wanted to see if a thirtyminute delay would make a difference. It did.

[10]He says visits to the health center by tired students decreased by half. Late arrivals to first period fell by a third. And students reported that they were less sleepy during the day.

[11]Eric Peterson knows that changing start time is easier at a small, private boarding school like his. But he is hopeful that other schools will find a way.[12]Patricia Moss,an assistant dean at St. George's School, says students were not the only ones reporting better results.[13]PATRICIA MOSS:“I can say that, almost all the teachers noticed immediately much more alertness in class, definitely more positive mood. Kids were happier to be there at eightthirty than they were at eight.” (no more than 5 words)

此处ahead of time意为“提前”。 submit to 呈交。 donate to 捐献; send in 送进; hand in 交上。 accuse sb.of(doing)sth. scold sb.for sth.因……而指责某人;remind sb.of sth. in the field of acting指“在表演这一领域”;tricks of the trade指“(内行人的)诀窍”,the trade在这里特指the field of acting。 由第二段“Word had gone round…had had a strange dream…wished to communicate it to the other animals.” 从倒数第二段的“…with great care for fear that…Clover was a motherly big horse…who had never quite got her figure back after her fourth kid.” 从最后一段的“he was well respected for his steadiness of character and extraordinary abilities.” 从最后一段的“Alone…he never laughed. If asked why, he would say that he saw nothing to laugh at.” :30/eightthirty.由本文最后一句“Kids were happier to be there at eightthirty than they were at eight.” 由前几段的内容及Danny所说的话“Getting up in the morning is pretty terrible… I can barely stay awake.”
