Have you ever had the strange feeling that you were being watched? You turned around and, sure enough, someone was looking right at you!

Some psychologists(心理学家)say that humans have a natural ability to sense when someone is looking at them.To study whether such a“sixth sense”really exists,Robert Baker,a psychologist at the University of Kentucky, performed two experiments.

In the first one,Baker sat behind unknowing people in public places and stared at the backs of their heads for 5 to 15 minutes. The subjects were eating, drinking, reading, studying, watching TV,or working at a computer.Baker made sure that the people could not tell that he was sitting behind them during those periods.Later, when he questioned the subjects, almost all of them said they had no sense that someone was staring at them.

For the second experiment,Baker told the subjects that they would be stared at from time to time from behind a twoway mirror in a lab setting. The people had to write down when they felt they were being stared at and when they weren’t.Baker found that the subjects were no better at telling when they were stared at than if they had just guessed.

Baker concluded that people do not have the ability to sense when they are being stared at.If you doubt the outcome of his two experiments,I suggest you repeat the experiments and see for yourselves.

7.What is the author’s attitude towards the result of the experiment?

  A.Supportive.

  B.Doubtful.

  C.Sympathetic.

  D.Surprising.

8.We can infer from the passage that______.

A.it’s most probable that humans have six senses

B.the socalled sixth sense doesn’t exist in human beings

C.the experiments done by Baker hardly explain anything

D.people should make conclusions by themselves

Stress can make us want to pull our hair out,but it’s also given as a common reason for increased hair loss or hair thinning, both in men and in women.Although there are few large studies on the topic, the agreement, supported

by animal models and human research,is that stressful events can cause temporary hair loss.

But is there any evidence to back this up?A study showed that emotional stress changed hair follicle(毛囊)cycling in mice, and ended the normal period of active hair growth in advance.

A few human studies have supported this conclusion, finding that the two types of temporary hair loss—telogen effluvium(休止期脱发)and alopecia areata(斑秃)—often follow stressful emotional or physical events.

Telogen effluvium is the most common type of hair loss caused by stress. This type of loss typically follows a physical stress, such as a surgery, illness, pregnancy, malnutrition,or a psychological stress.Around the time of the event, large numbers of hairs stop growing and move into the resting stage, known as the telogen stage. After about three months, these resting hairs start to fall out;this is when we notice the“handfuls”of hair lost in the shower.(Normal hair loss is about one hundred hairs a day.)Luckily, the hair will eventually grow back(if the problem above has been solved)in six to nine months.

Alopecia areata has a different system of hair loss, but can also be caused by stressful events. In alopecia areata, the immune(免疫的)system attacks the hair follicle, causing it to stop growing;this results in limited areas of hair loss.Usually the hair grows back in at most six to twelve months;sometimes this area of hair will be a slightly different color.

Stress won’t cause you to go hairless, but it might leave you with a haircoated pillow(枕头)sometime in the near future.

Topic 1.______ hair loss caused by stressful events

2.______ Emotional stress influences hair follicle cycling in mice and 3.______an end to the normal period of active hair growth before the hairs begin to 4.______ out.

Telogen effluvium *5.______ a physical or psychological stress,it stops large numbers of hairs from growing. *Generally, these hairs are

6.______ enough to grow back in six to nine

  months.

Alopecia areata *The immune system attacks the hair follicle. *It results in localized hair 7.______. *These hairs will return 8.______ six to twelve months.

9.______ Stress doesn’t necessarily make you hairless, but it may cause your hair to fall out at a 10.______ rate.

由倒数第二段的“The stranger looked at Mark Twain for several seconds and then answered,‘I’m a police officer...’”

由第一段中的“Besides writing,he also liked hunting and fishing very much”可知A项表述正确;由最后一段中的“Mark Twain was surprised and frightened when he heard this.He thought quickly and then answered...”

  答案:A

  答案:A
