  Unit 2 B卷

  一、阅读理解

  A

  (2012湛江一中月考)

If there is one thing I’m sure about,it is that in a hundred years from now on we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are necessary.Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.

The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives—the big political stories, the coverage(覆盖)of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same.I think there will be more coverage of scientific researches, though. It’s already happened in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic engineering. In the future,I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do—as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are.

It’s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted(传送)electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home.In fact,I’m pretty sure that how it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read—sports and international news,etc..

I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition among the different media. They actually feed_off each other. Some people once foresaw that televisions would kill off newspapers, but that hasn’t happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound in the air.And as for the Internet,it’s never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.

Send an email;make a charitable donation.Delete an email;make a charitable donation.A new service,GiveBackMail, introduced this week, promises to give 25 percent of its profits to charity if users route their email activities through its website.

GiveBackMail had about 200 users several days after opening for business.Every action users take on the site generates a new ad display, and income for the company.

“We have established great relationships with our charities, and we’re sure they will promote our service through their social associations, and give our users confidence that their donations really are going to their causes,”says Rambod Yadegar, founder of the service.

GiveBackMail currently offers users a choice of seven causes:cancer, education, poverty, the environment, animal rights,AIDS,and disaster relief. Two of the specific charities benefiting during the testing period are the American Red Cross and Conservation Northwest.Mr.Yadegar says users can suggest additional charities that, once checked out,can be added to the list.

“It's an interesting business model,”says Timothy Ogden, editor of philanthropy Action.“Whether it's significant or not depends on whether it can attract enough people.”Mr.Ogden notes that people tend to resist changing their Web habits, and that some companies trying to attract customers from other sites have actually offered payments.Mr.Yadegar says his site does not offer financial rewards.

Mr.Ogden says another challenge for GiveBackMail is competition from the ruling email providers:Google,Yahoo,Microsoft and AOL.“They can easily do the same thing themselves,”he says.“And because advertisers pay for viewers, the new service has the potential of reducing the big email providers' income bit by bit.”

Mr.Yadegar is quick to deny that possibility.“They have such a significant user base,”he says,“while we can have a significant impact in the nonprofit world by grasping only a very insignificant amount of their market share.”

  二、任务型读写

  阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在表格中的空白处填入恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填一个单词。

Time talks. It speaks more plainly than words.Time communicates in many ways.

In social life, time plays a very important part.In the United States, guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But this is perhaps not true in some other countries. There it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten.

The meanings of time differ in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from cultures that treat time differently.Promptness is valued highly in American life. For example,no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour.It would be too impolite. When equals(同辈)meet,a person who is five minutes late is expected to make a short apology. If he is less than five minutes late,he will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.

In the western world, particularly in the United States, people tend to think of time as something fixed in nature, something from which one cannot escape. As a rule,Americans think of time as a road stretching into the future, along which one progresses. The road has many sections which are to be kept separate—one thing at a time.People who cannot plan events are not highly regarded. The American idea of the future is limited, however. It is the foreseeable future, not the future of the South Asian, which may involve centuries.Someone has said of the South Asian idea of time.“Time is like a museum with endless halls and rooms. You,the viewer, are walking through the museum in the dark, holding a light to each scene as you pass it.God is in charge of the museum, and only he knows all that is in it.One lifetime represents one room.”

Since time has such different meanings in different cultures, communication is often difficult. We will understand each other a little better if we can keep this fact in mind.
