The other day at the supermarket,I saw a naughty child of about six crying loudly, falling to the floor and refusing to move. All the while the troubled mother was trying to persuade him to behave well but failed.A little smack(掴,打)on his bottom would have done the job,I thought.
Teenagers also cause discipline(纪律)problems.As a teacher I had a 16-year-old student
who had fallen in love with a waiter at a fast-food restaurant. In fact, she had left home to stay with him.So we decided to put her in the school hostel. She refused. When she heard her mother
begging her to stay in the hostel she turned round and said:“Why don’t you stay in the hostel if
you like it 80 much?”
My palms were itching to slap her for being so rude but the poor mother continued to cajole
her, hoping that gentle persuasion would work wonders. It did not.The last I heard, she had run
away from home again.
The list goes on and on.Could it be that today’s parents are softer and believe that they must not rod (棍棒惩罚)their children for fear of the bad result? Or do they actually believe that the children will get rid of the bad habits and behave well naturally as they grow older?I beg to
disagree.I believe it is the parents’duty to discipline the children even at a young age.
My children who are now adults will prove the fact that I used the rod when I thought it
necessary.Later when they went abroad, they related to their British university friends on how
they were disciplined.Their friends abroad were filled with horror and told my daughter that I
could be charged for child abuse(虐待).However,my daughter showed great respect for me
when she told them that she would not be where she was today if not for my strict discipline.

I went online to check my pay was in my bank account(账户).To my amazement I
discovered that not only had I been paid, a company I’d never worked for had also paid me!I
know I’d have been beside myself if my own salary was not in my account,so I tried to get the

The bank couldn’t help as it“wasn’t a bank problem.”The human-resource department at the company that paid me was unable to help as I didn’t have enough details.I rang the bank

One blue sky above us,
One ocean lapping at our shore,
One earth so great and round,
Who could ask for anything more?
Pete Seeger
In fact, nobody has the right to ask for anything more.If we humans fail to keep a balance between our needs and the needs of the natural world, our great round Earth will no longer be fit to live on.
There are many reasons for keeping this balance.
For one,if we continue to over—fish the seas, certain species will disappear. The kinds of fish that we humans catch feed on smaller ones, and if all these killers disappear, the smaller fish will overwhelm(泛滥)the sea.Edible(可食的)fish—as well as many fishermen’s livelihoods— will disappear.
And if we continue to clear land, cutting down trees, the animals, which use trees as a food
source and for shelter, will suffer from a disturbance. Many of them will eventually die out.
Since we love the beauty and grace of deer and moose running in our woods, protection
against over—hunting is also a must.If hunters break our laws and kill animals when it is not time, then these species won’t be there any more — for beauty or hunting.
Finally,if man keeps polluting and littering the waters——fresh and salt—— nonbiodegradable
substances(非降解物质)will build up and make the water unfit to support underwater lives.
Again, many people who make their living from the sea will no longer be able to.
We need this balance to keep the beauty of our world for ourselves and for our children and
grandchildren. For if that beauty disappears, everything man can hope to achieve will be lost forever.

Alfred Korzybski believes that all human beings lead a kind of double life.First, people live in an internal(内在的)world of ideas, feelings, etc. The happenings in this world are patterns of events in the human nervous system.Secondly, people live in a world outside their skins, the external(外内的)world of“reality”.The happenings in this world are patterns of events best known to science.
The first world, the patterns of events inside our skins,Korzybski called the INTENSIONAL area. The second, the patterns of events outside our skins,he called the EXTENSIONAL
area.Think for a moment about the two worlds in which you live.Look, for example,at the following diagram:

PhysicaI tensions aroused
by the cat:the urge to
pick it up,to kick it,etc.
Thinking along these lines,Alfred Korzybski began to see what was wrong with the great number of people:they confused intensional events with extensional“reality”.He believed that too many people mistake the events in their own nervous systems for events in the outside world. When they get lost in a strange city, more often than not they are angry at the map they use.In fact,it’s the maps of words in their heads that are to blame.

“Our aim is to take our art to the world and make
people understand what it is to move,” said David Belle,
the founder of parkour(跑酷).
Do you love running? It is a good exercise, yet
many people find it boring. But what if making your
morning jog a creative one? Like jumping from walls
and over gaps, and ground rolls? Just like the James Bond in the movie Casino Royale? Bond jumps down from a roof to a windowsill(窗台) and then runs several blocks over obstacles on the way. It is just because of Bond’s wonderful performances that the sport has become popular worldwide.
Yes, that’s parkour, an extreme street sport aimed at moving from one point to another as quickly as possible, getting over all the obstacles in the path using only the abilities of the human body. Parkour is considered an extreme sport. As its participants dash around a city, they may jump over fences, run up walls and even move from rooftop to rooftop.
Parkour can be just as exciting and charming as it sounds, but its participants see parkour much more than that.
Overcoming all the obstacles on the course and in life is part of the philosophy(理念) behind parkour. This is the same as life. You must determine your destination, go straight, jump over all the barriers as if in parkour and never fall back from them in your life, to reach the destination successfully. A parkour lover said, “I love parkour because its philosophy has become my life, my way to do everything.”
Another philosophy we’ve learnt from parkour is freedom. It can be done by anyone, at any time, anywhere in the world. It is a kind of expression of trust in yourself that you earn energy and confidence.

A. its founder, David Belle

D. It is a team sport.
58. As its participants move around a city, ___________.
A. they can ask for help
B. they may choose to escape
C. they must learn to survive
D. they should run to extremes
59. Which of the following is the philosophy of parkour?
A. Determination and freedom.
B. Excitement and popularity.
C. Dreams and success.
D. Sports and extremes.

With eco-tourism on the rise, eco-hotels are fast becoming the darling of the travel industry. These days, however, staying at an eco-hotel doesn’t necessarily mean vacationing in a tree house in the Costa Rican jungle, although that is certainly a choice.
The majority of eco-hotels fall into one of several categories: hotels and resorts that conserve ecologically important habitats; “green” hotels that reduce, recycle, minimize waste, and protect water; sustainable hotels that harvest food from gardens on the hotel property or get part of all their power from renewable energy; hotels that encourage community involvement such as guests taking part in trail clearing; and hotels that offer some form of environmental education to their guests.
As such, eco-hotels are a various group. Stylish urban hotels like the Willard Inter-Continental Washington focus on energy conservation whereas the Rosario Resort&Spa on Orcas Island in Washington State offers a wildly popular “green” vacation package where guests can “take a hike, clear a trail”.
No matter what you call them, eco-hotel, eco-lodge, eco-resort, or green hotel, they’re part of the “greening” of the tourism industry.
Part of what drives this greening of the hotel industry is no doubt competition. Going green is yet another way to distinguish a hotel from the mass of other excellent hotels that consumers have to choose from. But for many hotels, it’s also part of their philosophy. With the concept of “going green” firmly rooted in consumers’ minds, eco-hotels have taken it to the next level, and whether or not money is the driving factor behind the greening of the hotel industry doesn’t matter so much as it’s good for the planet.
64. The underlined part in the first paragraph means _______.

67. People who choose to stay at eco-hotels ______.

Scientists have found that human eyes are more likely to be damaged by UV rays (紫外线) while skiing in the snow-covered areas than sitting on the beach, according to a report by the UK newspaper The Telegraph.
The researchers at Kanazawa Medical University, Japan and American company Johnson conducted the study together. They looked at the effects of light reflection on newly fallen snow on a ski trail (a rough path) in Ishikawa District, northern Japan. They compared the results with the levels of UV rays on a sand beach in southern Japan's Okinawa District. They found that on the beach, eyes are exposed to a daily 260 kilojoules (千焦耳) of UV a square meter compared to 658 kilojoules in snow-covered areas.
The findings are supported by the Japan Meteorological Agency. According to the agency, the reflection rate of UV light on beaches is often between 10 and 25 percent, compared to 80 percent in the new snow areas. The amount of light increased 4 percent with a 300-meter rise in height.
Most of us know that UV rays can harm the skin. That's why we wear sunscreen on our skin before we get out in the sun. But many of us may not realize that UV rays are also harmful to the eyes.
If your eyes are exposed to large amounts of UV radiation over a short period of time, you may experience a kind of sunburn of the eye, which is harmful. Your eyes will become red and feel a strange feeling. They may be sensitive to light. Fortunately, this is usually temporary and seldom causes permanent damage to the eyes.
Long-term exposure to UV radiation, however, can be more serious. Scientific studies and researches have shown that exposure to small amounts of UV radiation over a period of many years increases the chance of eye damage, which could lead to total blindness.

If women are mercilessly exploited(剥削) year after year, they have only themselves to blame. Because they tremble at the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion, they are always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stores. Clothes which have been worn only a few times have to be put aside because of the change of fashion.
Changing fashions are nothing more than the intentional creation of waste. Many women spend large sums of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn. Women who cannot afford to throw away clothing in this way, waste hours of their time changing their old-fashioned dresses. Skirts are lengthened or shortened; neck-lines are lowered or raised, and so on.
No one can claim that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society. Fashion designers are rarely concerned with necessary things like warmth, comfort and durability (耐用). They are only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the fact that women will put up with any amount of discomfort, as long as they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn't at some time in his life smiled at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin dress on a winter day, or picking her way through deep snow in high heeled shoes.
When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are obvious. Do the constantly changing fashions of women's clothes, one wonders, reflect basic qualities of inconstancy and instability? Men are too clever to let themselves be cheated by fashion designers. Do their unchanging styles of dress reflect basic qualities of stability and reliability(稳定耐用)? That is for you to decide.
72. Designers and big stores always make money_________.
A. by mercilessly exploiting women workers in the clothing industry
B. because they are capable of predicting new fashions
C. because they attach great importance to quality in women's clothing
D. by constantly changing the fashions in women's clothing
73. To the writer, the fact that women change their old-fashioned dresses is seen as ___________.
A. a waste of time
B. a waste of money
C. an expression of taste
D. an expression of love beauty
74. New fashions in clothing are created for ___________.
A. an important contribution to society
B. the women's strength of character
C. basic qualities of inconstancy and instability
D. the commercial exploitation of women
75. By saying "the conclusions to be drawn are obvious" (Line One to Line Two, Paragraph Four),
the writer means that ___________.
A. women's inconstancy in their choice of clothing is often laughed at
B. women are better able to put up with discomfort
C. men are also exploited greatly by fashion designers
D. men are more reasonable in the matter of fashion
