Empathy
Last year, researchers from the University of Michigan reported that empathy, the ability to understand other people, among college students had dropped sharply over the past 10 years. __71__ Today, people spend more time alone and are less likely to join groups and clubs.
Jennifer Freed, a co-director of a teen program, has another explanation. Turn on the TV, and you’re showered with news and reality shows full of people fighting, competing, and generally treating one another with no respect. __72__
There are good reasons not to follow those bad examples. Humans are socially related by nature. __73__ Researchers have also found that empathetic teenagers are more likely to have high self-respect. Besides, empathy can be a cure for loneliness, sadness, anxiety, and fear.
Empathy is also an indication of a good leader. In fact, Freed says, many top companies report that empathy is one of the most important things they look for in new managers. __74__ “Academics are important. But if you don’t have emotional intelligence, you won’t be as successful in work or in your love life,” she says.
What’s the best way to up your EQ (情商)? For starters, let down your guard and really listen to others. __75__
To really develop empathy, you’d better volunteer at a nursing home or a hospital, join a club or a team that has a diverse membership, have a “sharing circle” with your family, or spend time caring for pets at an animal shelter.
Everyone is different, and levels of empathy differ from person to person.
Having relationships with other people is an important part of being human—and having empathy is decisive to those relationships.
Humans learn by example—and most of the examples on it are anything but empathetic.
“One doesn’t develop empathy by having a lot of opinions and doing a lot of talking,” Freed says.
Empathy is a matter of learning how to understand someone else—both what they think and how they feel.
Good social skills—including empathy—are a kind of “emotional intelligence” that will help you succeed in many areas of life.
G.That could be because so many people have replaced face time with screen time, the researchers said.

Before going outside in the morning, many of us check a window thermometer (温度计) for the temperature. This helps us decide what to wear.
71
We want our food to be a certain coldness in the refrigerator. We want it a certain hotness in the oven. If we don’t feel well, we use a thermometer to see if we have a fever. We keep our rooms a certain warmth in the winter and a certain coolness in the summer.
Not all the thermometers use the same system to measure temperature. We use a system called the Fahrenheit scale. But most other countries use the Centigrade scale.
Both systems use the freezing and boiling points of water as their guide.
72
The most common kind of thermometer is made with mercury (水银) inside a clear glass tube. As mercury ( or any other liquid ) becomes hot, it expands. As it gets colder, it contracts (收缩) . That is why on hot days the mercury line is high in the glass tube.
73
First, take a clear glass juice bottle that has a cap; fill the bottle with colored water. Tap a hole in the center of the cap using a hammer and thick nail. Put the cap on the jar. Then stick a plastic straw (吸管) through the nail hole.
74
Finally, place a white card on the outside of the bottle and behind the straw. Now you can see the water level easily.
75
As the temperature goes down, the water will contract, and the level in the straw will come down. Perhaps you will want to keep a record of the water level in the straw each morning for a week.
We use and depend on thermometers to measure the temperature of many other things in our daily lives.
Thermometers measure temperature, by using materials that change in the same way when they are heated or cooled.
Now that you know this rule you can make a thermometer of your own that will work.
The water will rise in the straw. As the temperature of the air goes up, the water will expand and rise even higher.
They label these in different ways. On the Fahrenheit scale water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees. On the Celsius scale water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100 degrees.
Take wax ( you may use an old candle if you have one ) and melt some of it right where the straw is stuck into the cap to seal them together.
People use thermometers which are made by themselves when travelling around the world.
