In his first major UK interview, Mark Pincus, the founder and chief executive of Zynga, gives a unique insight into the new craze sweeping the web.
The web is like one big cocktail party, according to Pincus.Zynga, a fast-growing social gaming company which is most famous for creating the hugely popular FarmVille, has yet to reach the same levels of fame as its American technology contemporaries, such as Twitter or Facebook. However, FarmVille has reportedly been worth $5.5 billion in just three years and has revolutionised online gaming. Consumers and businesses alike are taking notice of these.
Sitting in his meeting room, Pincus says, "Since Napster, MySpaceand Facebookwere created, the web has become a social place, with lots and lots of smaller cocktail parties happening everywhere. Earlier, the web was a huge place that wasn’t connected in any way, and then Napsterlaunched and the web suddenly lit up. The Internet has become this place where people could come together around their interests. And now I am hosting one of the biggest cocktail parties online."
He’s not joking. More than 320 million people around the world have downloaded FarmVille, Zynga’s most popular game to date. And the company currently has 60 million active players. As people live their lives increasingly online, they want to do everything with their friends in one place. Zynga effectively colonised Facebook, building a hugely successful platform on top of another.
"In 2007, people felt sorry for me,"he said. "They asked me what I did for a living, and I told them I was developing application1 services for Facebook. They asked me why I was focusing my energies on something so menial2 and how I could hope to build a business effectively on top of another one. But by the fall of 2007, we were profitable." Notes:

Eric Schmidt, Google’s chief executive, has said that the TV industry is wrong to fear the effect that Google TV will have on their revenue1.
The search giant’s new TV service, which recently launched in the US, integrates2 applications and the Internet directly into televisions. It brings basic elements, such as search or web browsing, and combines both web and TV.
However, at the end of last month, several major US broadcasters, including ABC, CBS and NBC, blocked some of their most popular television programmes from being accessible through Google’s new television service.
Speaking at the Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco, Schmidt said, "The concern from the TV executives is that this enormous revenue stream will be affected negatively by this browser. I disagree. I think people will watch more TV."
The discontent among US networks means that hit television shows, such as TheOfficeand CSI, cannot be viewed through Google TV. The reasons for the action have not officially been stated, but it is thought that some broadcasters are concerned that Google TV will control the existing revenue streams.
"Everybody knows that Google has great control over Internet users in terms of advertising,"said Van Baker, an analyst. "If they take that model and extend it to television, suddenly Google’s power will become enormous in the advertising space. And the broadcasters don’t like that idea."
Schmidt admitted that TV was a "big business"for Google, but he said that an open browser on the TV would lead to greater gain for all. "The way to get more revenue is to create more revenue streams,"he explained. Notes:
