Ketsana Hits Vietnam, Kills At Least 23

Typhoon Ketsana continued its deadly path across Southeast Asia as it ripped into the coast of Vietnam, killing at least 23 people there after leaving more than 280 people dead or missing in the Philippines over the weekend.

Two fresh storms were brewing in the Pacific east of the Philippines, meanwhile, and threatened to hamper rescue and cleanup operations still under way there, especially in Manila and surrounding areas.

In Vietnam, disaster officials said the storm slammed into the coast just south of Danang, in the center of the country. Around 170,000 people were evacuated from the area as floodwaters began to flow into Danang and Hue city, the country's old precolonial capital and a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Airlines in Vietnam suspended flights to the area, stranding hundreds if not thousands of passengers, and electricity supplies were also knocked out. Some people were killed by falling trees and mudslides, including a family of five whose house was buried by mud, the Associated Press reported.

The initial destruction wasn't nearly as bad as in the Philippines, however, where almost 400,000 people have huddled down in schools, churches, gymnasiums and other shelters after a month's worth of rain fell on the Manila area on Saturday. The National Disaster Coordinating Council in Manila said Tuesday that 38 people were missing in addition to the 246 people confirmed to have been killed in the floods and landslides accompanying the storm. Authorities are still investigating reports of other deaths.
