Thats also the way I do it.Since the day I began learning English,I started to memorize words.First ,the ones in the textbooks ,then what I happened to meet in the newspapers ,novels and even on the Internet.I still remember a classmate of mine gossiped: Ren Chang is reciting the dictionary)?Thats never the case.I would easily get tired memorizing words for some definite purposes ,such as for exams. To be frank,I never finished the dictionary for CET-4.I just memorize the words Id like to. Interest plays a very important role.If you dont like a language, you wont want to learn it ,and even if you do,youre objecting it subconsciously, which is a hin-drance to deep involvement and inspiration. But if youre fond of it ,everything seems quite natural.Words get into your memory and stay, just like magic.
Reading is also an important part in language learning.Weve got an old Chinese saying If you read the poems again and again, you will surely be able to sing even though you cant write. To be familiar with the articles written by natives , you can get a hint how they handle the language, and may be able to make use of what you read in your own writing. You may ask what to read.First your textbooks, theyre chosen because theyre typical and usually formal. Then some interesting novels ,better choose the ones written today than those of the 18th century,if youre not going to be a linguist.Newspapers and magazines are good choices too, especially if you are concerned with the news at home and abroad.
When it comes to the matter of listening,I highly recommend that you watch English videos ,of course with the Chinese subtitles.Yes ,here comes one problem, you may gradually shift your attention from the dialogues to the subtitles. But every coin has two sides ,right ?Films provide a circumstance for the dialogues and subtitles help understand the dialogues.Whats more,it is interesting to watch films. And one more thing, listen to English songs and try to sing them.It will not only improve your English but also enrich your life.
Speaking is often considered a great problem. One way to solve it is talking to yourself.Dont care what others think of you.I talk to myself when Im happy and share my sorrow with myself. You will never laugh at yourself. Then you can go straight out and talk to native speakers.Trust me,theyre better at understandingy our wrong usages than those Chinese who can speak English. If youre still too shy,try the voice chat on the net ,but dont ever expect good voice quality.
