　　The referee uses a whistle to control the game. Its the name for the object he puts to his mouth which makes a loud noise.

　　The area marked by white lines outside of which goalkeepers cannot use their hands. Also called the penalty area.

　　If you have 13 caps for your country, it means that you have played 13 matches for that country.

　　The competition to win the league.

　　A division is a group of teams with a similar level. In England the First Division is actually the name for the second group of teams.

　　If you kick a player instead of the ball, this is a foul.

　　The white marking across the middle of the pitch is the half way line.

　　A group of divisions - in England the Football League is made up of the First, Second and Third Divisions.

　　linesman 边裁

　　One of the people who controls the match. He carries a flag and runs up and down the touchline(边线). There are two linesmen in a match, one for each half of the pitch(球场). Now more correctly called an assistant referee(助理裁判).

　　manager 教练(经理)

　　The person who is responsible for the team. He trains the players, chooses which ones will be in the team and he also decides how they are going to play. Sometimes this job is also referred to as the coach(教练).

　　A game of football is called a match.

　　National Anthem 国歌

　　The song for a country which is usually played before international football matches.

　　nil 零

　　Zero, nothing, nought, 0. The score 1 - 0 is said:- one nil.

　　officials 指 裁判

　　The people who control the game, the referee and assistant referees are called the officials.

　　out of contract 合约到期，满约

　　If a player is out of contract it means he is able to move to a different football club.

　　The name for the top group of teams in England. It used to be called the First Division.

　　professional 职业球员

　　If you are a professional footballer it means that that is your full-time job. It is not a hobby or something you do part-time.

　　referee 裁判

　　The person who controls the game from on the pitch. He has a whistle to start and stop the game.

　　scored 进球

　　If you have scored, you have got a goal.

　　season 赛季

　　The period when a championship is played is a season. In England the football season is from August until September.

　　The second 45 minutes of a football match.

　　shot 射门

　　Kicking the ball towards the goal to try and score is a shot.

　　stands 看台

　　Where people watch a football from. Although today most people sit at a football match in the past it was common to stand.

　　striker 射手

　　a striker is a goalscorer.

　　touchline 边线

　　The white line around a football pitch is the touchline. When the ball crosses the line it is out of play or in touch.

　　trophies 奖品，奖杯

　　A trophy is a prize given to a football team when they have won a competition. Usually it is a large silver cup.

　　To volley the ball is to kick it when it is in mid-air, it is not on the ground.

　　yellow card 黄牌

　　If a player commits a bad foul, the referee may show him a yellow card. It is a strong warning. If a player gets a second yellow card he has to leave the pitch.
