Section B Passage One
It was not yet eleven oclock when a boat crossed the river with a single passenger
who had promised to pay an extra far.
While the youth stood on the landing place searching in his pockets for money
the boatman got close to him and with the help of the moonlight
took a careful look at the stranger---a young man of just 18 years
obviously country bred, and now,as it seemer
on his first visit to town.
He was wearing a rough gray coat
which was in good shap
The clothes under his coat were well made of leathee
and fitted tightly to a pair of fat legs
his blue cotton stockings must have been the work of his mother or sister
and on his head was a 3-cornered hat.
In his left hand was a walking stick
which hung on his strong shoulder
with 2 leather bags on both ends of the stick.
The youth, whose name was Robin, paid the boatman
and then walked forward into the town with light steps
as if he had not already traveled more than 30 miles that day.
As he walked alone he looked about his surroundings
as eagerly as if he were entering London or Madrid
in stead of the little town.
11. Why was the boarman willing to taken Robin across the river?
12. What time of the year did the story most probably take place?
13. At what time of the day did Robin cross the river?
14. What do we know from the context about Robin?
Passage Two
In the year 2000,the world is going to have a population of about 8 billion.
Most scientists agree that the most severe problem is food suppy.
Who is going to feed all those people?
Where is the food going to come from?
Are you going to have enough food?
Are we going to produce more artificial food?
One way of improving the situation is for people to eat less meat. Why?
Because it takes four kilo of grain protein to produce half a kilo of meat protein.
Clearly, there is not going to be sufficient meat protein for 8 billion people.
Therefore,it will also be necessary to change eating habits
because meat is the main part of many peoples food today.
A possible solution to this latter problem is the soybea
The soybean plant produces beans which have a very high fat and protein content.
Scientists can now make these look and taste like real mea
They can also make many other artificial products such as soybean milk,
for example, which has a taste of milk and can be used in cooking
in very much the same ways as cows milk.
In fact, one woman in the United States fed her family only on soybeans for a year.
She gave them soybean beef, soybean chicke,
soybean milk,and sometimes just soybean.
Possibly,we are all going to eat soybeans in the future
and finally give up meat completely from our tables.
15. What is the main subject of the passage?
16.Why will meat completely disappear in the future according to the passage?
17. What do we know about soybean meat?
Passage Three
If you want to stay young, sit down and have a good thing.
This is the research finding of a team of Japanese doctors
who say that most of our brains are not getting enough exercises
---and as a result we are growing old unnecessarily soon.
Professor Taiju Matsuzawa wanted to find out
why quite healthy farmers
in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think
and reason at a rather early age
and how the speed of getting old could be slowed down.
With a team of researchers at Tokyo National University
he set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different jobs.
Computer technology helped the researchers to get most measurements of the volume
of the front and side parts of brain
which have something to do with intellect and feeling
and decide the human characte
As we all know, the back part of the brain
which controls tasks like eating and breathing
does not contract with age.
Contraction of the front and side parts
--as cells die off--was seen in some people in their thirties
but it was still not found in some sixty and seventy-year olds.
Matsuzawa concluded from his tests that there is a simple way
to prevent the contraction--using the head
