　　When we think of money today, we picture it either as round, flat pieces of metal coins; or as printed paper notes. But there are still parts of the world today where coins and notes are of no use. They would buy nothing, and traveler could starve if he has none of the local money to exchange for food. Among isolated peoples, commerce usually means a direct exchange of goods. Perhaps it is fish for vegetables, meat for grain, or various kinds of food in exchange for pots, baskets, or other manufactured goods. For this kind of simple trading, money is not needed. But there is often something that everyone wants and everybody can use, such as salt to flavor food, or iron and copper to make into tools and vessels. These things are still used as money in the remote parts of the world today.

　　今天当我们提及钱的时候,我们脑海中会浮现圆的扁平的金属硬币。或者是一堆印刷钞票。但是，今天的世界仍然存在着一些个地方，硬币钞票是没有作用的。他们买不了东西，旅行者如果没有当地的钱来交换食物的话，终会饥饿。在偏远地区的人们，贸易就是直接的物物交换。也许就是用于换菜，肉换谷物，或者各种各样的东西换锅，篮子，或者其他制成品。对于间的的贸易来讲，钱是不必要的。但是今天它往往仍是人们渴望的，每个人可以使用的，就像使食物更有风味的盐，或制成工具和器皿的铜铁。今天在世界的偏远的地方，这些东西仍然被当作钱。
