I prefer adjusting ourselves to new circumstances to remaining unchanged.
On some occasions, you have no way but to change yourself for new circumstances like cancer if you still have a dream yet to be realized.
On the contrary, if you refuse to gear yourself towards new circumstances, hardly can you survive, let alone realizing dreams.(不改变的缺点)
The story of Lance Armstrong, an American cyclist who overcame a deadly cancer, could well exemplify my point.
Raised in a single-parent family, Lance Armstrong lived with his mother for over 19 years until he found our his talent for cycling and decided to move out on his own so that he could join the American national cycling team under coach Chris Carmichael. However, he exhibited somewhat traits of a teenager who lacked parental love, such as rudeness and egoism.
To be more specific, in 1990 Amateur World Championship in Japan, he ignored the suggestion of his coach Chris that he was supposed to save energy before the final charge. Actually, at that time, he quickly pedaled to a big lead in order to show up before all the competitors. However that charge consumed him too much energy. Finally, he finished eleventh.
Whats worse, he didntt give his opponents any respect. Instead, he would shout at them and insult them during races. In response other riders sometimes got in his way on purpose and tried to slow him down.
However, unfortunately, he was almost sentenced to death by his doctor in 1996 when he informed Lance that he suffered from testicular cancer. At the beginning, he was unable to face the music since he was always so proud of his physique. But doctors warned him that if he kept on wasting time, it would be impossible to cure him.
In that case, he had a rethink about himself. For all these years, he had never got somewhere in the cycling field due to his unwillingness to cooperate with his coach and team members. This time if still kept unchanged, he might die later. Therefore, confronted with the new circumstance, namely, the fatal cancer, Lance Armstrong decided to change his attitudes towards others in order to overcome the disease and pedal his beloved bicycle once again.
More specifically, he listened to the advice of his doctor, who encouraged him to undergo a surgery to remove one of his testicles. After a three-hour operation, he continued to take the chemotherapy. Painful though the therapy was, his body handled the drugs without too many side effects.
Whats more, he also strengthened his communication with his doctors. From time to time, Lance talked to his doctors about his treatment and hoped that they could use drugs that wouldnt destroy his muscles or hurt his chance of returning to cycling someday.
At last, after a treatment of over 1 year, Lance miraculously recovered and returned to the cycling field in 1998. More significant was the fact that he won seven straight victories in Tour-de-France, the World Cup in his field, which was greatly associated with his cooperation with the whole team.
Had Lance Armstrong fail to change himself and cooperate with his doctors, he might not have conquered the cancer and gained the champion.
Therefore, it is necessary for us to adapt ourselves to new environment.
