Neil: Hello and welcome to Authentic Real English from BBC Learning English. Im Neil. Presenting the programme with me today is Li. She hasnt arrived at the studio yet and I must say that Im a bit nervous about her arrival. Somethings happened to her recently... shes so unfriendly and even frightening. A real dragon!
Li: (Bursts into the studio) What are you saying? Why didnt you wait for me Neil? (reads a bit out) Ahh hello, Im Li... blah blah blah...
Neil: Li, whats the matter with you?
Li: What do you mean? Can we get on with this please?
Neil: What a dragon!
Neil: I said that youre a dragon, Li.
Li: No Im not, Im a rooster.
Neil: No, Im not talking about your zodiac sign, I mean your personality.
Li: Oh! Oh, thanks!
Neil: What?
Li: I said thank you.
Neil: Li, I called you a dragon. Thats not a compliment.
Neil: Listen to these examples and see if you can get the meaning.
A: Im never going to make my deadline with this report.
B: You should speak to Kate to get an extension.
A: But Im too scared of Kate shes such a dragon.
B: Thats true. Shes so unfriendly and scary. Shell probably shout at you.
C: (coughing)
D: Oh that doesnt sound good. You should go to the doctors.
C: I cant face dealing with that dragon at reception. Shes always so rude and aggressive.
D: Yeah, shes the last thing you want to deal with when youre ill.
Neil, are you calling me unfriendly and scary?
Neil: Erm... yes. Recently.
Li: Not strong, courageous and determined?
Neil: Im afraid not. We use dragon to describe a woman who is unfriendly and frightening.
Li: Oh, thats very interesting.
Neil: Yes it is, isnt it?
Li: Hang on, hang on. What do you mean Im unfriendly?
Neil: Well, not usually but recently you have been.
Neil: Now youre getting scary!
Neil: OK, Li I think Im going to leave now before you start breathing fire.
Li: Breathing fire!? Ill burn you till youre toast! Bye!
