今天是农历 (the lunar calendar) 龙年第七天，2012年当仁不让的主角一定是龙!

作为十二生肖 (the 12 animals that represent the Chinese calendar) 中唯一一个神话动物 (legendary creature)，龙的形象因时代变迁略有不同，在中国传统文化中，龙是权势 (lordliness)、高贵 (noble) 的象征，同时它也是幸运和成功的标志。
通常我们说到龙的时候都会脱口而出一个单词：dragon。不过dragon这个词所表达的意思可是与我们的龙有很大的差别。在西方的传说中龙大多被描绘成一种长着锋利的牙齿，强壮的四肢，长长的尾巴，一对像蝙蝠翅膀的巨翼，飞到哪里喷火到哪里的可怕巨兽 (monster )，说起来形象更类似于长了翅膀的远古时代的恐龙 (dinosaur )。所以如果单纯用dragon来表示中国的龙貌似有些不妥，说中国的龙的时候可以说成是 Chinese dragon。据说现在有不少人都建议将 Loong 作为中国龙的英文翻译，读音与汉语的龙相似，而且两个 o 像极了龙的那双炯炯有神的眼睛，不知道会不会被广泛接受。
在中国，关于龙的成语数不胜数，比喻吉庆之事，我们可以说龙凤呈祥 (prosperity brought by the dragon and the phoenix);比喻某人奋起行动，有所作为，可以说龙腾虎跃 (a scene of bustling activity);比喻使文章或讲话内容生动有力的关键一笔时就用画龙点睛 (add the most important touch that brings a work of art to life)
