What foreign languages have you studied?

I study English as my second language.

Why did you choose to study that language? How did you learn that language?

Knowing English means more opportunities while you hunting a job in China. Practice makes perfect. Normally I practice what I learned by finding conversation partners, either over the internet via Skype, or in the local community. Most colleges that offer language department have open conversation groups that anyone can attend.

Would you say its a difficult language to learn?

English is a beautiful language to learn but it provides a challenge. Languages are cumulative and everything you learn from day one builds upon itself. English grammar can be rather complicated. Pronunciation can be difficult as well. Moreover, you need courage to speak out.

Do people in your country have many chances to practice oral English?

Yes. You can find a language partner either over the internet via Skype, or in the local community. When you find such a face-to-face person to work together you can practice your oral English and teach your partner Chinese as an exchange.

Do you think its important to know more than one language?

Yes. Knowing another language helps you to understand people of other cultures not just verbally but socially. Also, in a growing global economy knowing more than one language gives you more opportunities.

If you had the chance, would you be willing to learn another language?

Yes. Knowing more languages is cool. But every language provides challenge and needs you to work hard. You have to remember vocabularies, studying sentence structure, pronunciation and grammar as well.

Besides English, have you studied any other languages?

I have worked really hard at being almost fluent in English and recently Ive taken a large interest in French. But it is hard because of its complicated grammar and difficult pronunciation.

What do you think of your level in that language?

I am a moron at French. The complicated grammar and difficult pronunciation shocked me, so it is hard for me to continue.

What is the most difficult part about studying a foreign language?

Grammar rules are hard to remember especially when the two languages have a huge gap between them. But the most important of all is determination, though it has nothing to do with the language itself, it really is the thing that decides how fast you are going to learn that language.

What do you think is the most effective way to learn a foreign language?

I think the most effective way to learn a foreign language is full immersion which means live and speak in that language.

  How did you learn English?

I study grammar and vocabulary in college. Then, learn the culture, slangs and pronunciation by watching movies. Im not as fluent as a native speaker now. If true fluency is the goal, you will probably more time exposed to the language on a daily basis.
