Tire Track Eels are mainly found in Sri Lanka, South China and Sumatra. They are mainly nocturnal, spending most of the day buried in the gravel, or in a dark protected space, with only their heads exposed.

体细长，稍侧扁，尾部甚扁薄。吻极尖，前端有1尖长的吻突。口裂浅。具细齿。有眼下刺。体鳞甚细。背鳍基长，前部由35枚左右游离短棘组成;臀鳍具棘2枚，且连尾鳍;胸鳍短圆;无腹鳍。体侧有多数块状网纹或纵波纹。
栖息在砂石底的江河溪流，常藏匿于石缝洞穴，以小型无脊椎动物和部分植物为食。体重可达0.5kg。肉细嫩，味佳，群众喜食。分布于长江以南的各水系。
