植物和动物减少的原因很多，但其中大部分跟人类活动有关。首先，人类已经出现在地球上包括南极、北极和喜马拉雅山在内的几乎所有地方，这侵占了很多动物的生存环境。比如熊猫原来生活在山里竹子可以生长的地方，但自从人类活动以后，熊猫的生存环境被破坏，导致濒临灭绝。
其次，人类活动改变了地球的自然环境，很多植物和动物无法适应。比如人类活动排放了大量的二氧化碳，导致温室效应，南极的冰山面积减少，其它地方的气温也升高，无法及时适应的植物和动物就灭亡了。
甚至，人类会直接消灭很多植物和动物物种。比如人类会砍伐南美的热带雨林，其中一些脆弱的植物品种就会永远消失;又如人类会不断猎杀鲸鱼，未来鲸鱼也可能消失，更为人所关注的例子是，人类活动之后，华南虎只能在照片中看到。
人类应该在关注自身利益的同时，考虑其它植物和动物的生存环境，设立自然环境保护区，尽量减少植物、动物的灭绝速度。
