除了语音、语速这些问题，听力中涉及的学术讨论和学术讲座也很让考生头痛。很多考生反映：一听到第3、4部分我就头晕，那些专业术语听不懂不说，听懂的部分还很可能只是只言片语，并非文章的真正涵义。对此，考生应该首先练习泛听，形成语境。
要接触各种题材的文章，考生可尝试先从数量上加大对英语文章的聆听，如BBC电台广播、TVBPearl、迪斯尼动画片等都是非常好的选择，能有效帮助考生提前进入一个英语的语言环境，为真正考试热身。
另外，在进行泛听的同时，还要有目的地积累词汇，按照考试场景分类词典来积累雅思考试的核心词汇，然后把词汇造成句子使用到听到、读到的文章里面，形成一个初步的输入-输出的学习过程。形成较好的语感后，考生可以开始练习跟读，把别人的声音变成自己的声音相当重要。
在跟读阶段推荐《新概念英语》，因为它的语言严谨，内容关联性强，跟读可以熟悉逻辑关联词的语气，在考试时就能迅速把握文章的脉络。跟读练习一段时间后，考生水平会提高不少。到这一阶段专家推荐考生可以多听听《listentothis》的中高级，然后再到一些英语网站上下载一些英语电视台的资讯，非凡是时事类的节目。像美国老牌电视资讯节目60分钟，无论在语速还是内容上都非常切合雅思听力的后半部分，也能有效锻炼考生的思维能力。
