典故：英语国家的人认为西班牙人spaniard好吹牛,由来已久。16世纪前后是西班牙航海事业的鼎盛时期,当时西班牙国王的支持下,哥论布从西班牙出航绕地球航行,第一次发现了美洲。西班牙建立了世界上最强大的海军,其无敌舰队The Armada,号称天下无敌,坚不可摧。不料1588年该舰队被英国一举打败。
从此英国人开始嘲笑西班牙人好吹牛,爱说大话。随后又嘲笑西班牙运动员最能吹牛。健壮勇猛,野心勃勃的运动员,常在赛前夸下海口,发誓夺冠军,可有时常以失败告终,终于落下爱吹牛皮的罪名。
英语习语中Spanish athlete字面意思为西班牙运动员,而真实意思是胡说八道的人,吹牛者。
例句：The life science is not a Spanish Castle. Its courses are quite popular with non- science majors。
生命科学并不是不切实际的空谈，这门课程在非理工科的大学生中很受欢迎。
