Tattoo: “纹身”的来历
对于tattoo，我们并不陌生，彰显个性的“纹身”嘛！不过，如若看到——My heart beat a tattoo on my ribs，怎么解释它的用法？先告诉您，这句话可翻译为“我的心扑通扑通在跳”，是不是日常生活中，它的使用频率蛮高？
Tattoo最早指“归营号”，即军队里“击鼓或吹号招士兵回营”，源于单词“tap-too”。1644年英国内战的时候，时任议会军驻诺丁汉郡将领John Hutchinson（约翰·哈钦森），在一份官方文件里规定，“士兵在tap-too（归营号）吹响之前还未归营者，将受以处罚，处罚金额相当于今天的5英镑或8美元”。 到18世纪，tap-too beate（吹号）逐渐演变为beat tattoo，在现实生活中可泛指一切“连续而均匀地击鼓或轻叩声”，如：He beat a tattoo with his fingers on the table-top.（他用手指轻轻敲着桌面。） Tattoo的另一用法“纹身”，源于英国航海探险家James Cook（詹姆斯·库克）船长，他在1769年的日志中，用“Tattow”一词来形容南太平洋土著居民在身上刺涂花纹的习俗。随着时间的推移，在皮肤上刺花纹已成为当今的流行时尚，而当时的土著词汇Tattow也逐渐被人们改写为tattoo。
