Tattoo最早指“归营号”,即军队里“击鼓或吹号招士兵回营”,源于单词“tap-too”。1644年英国内战的时候,时任议会军驻诺丁汉郡将领John Hutchinson(约翰·哈钦森),在一份官方文件里规定,“士兵在tap-too(归营号)吹响之前还未归营者,将受以处罚,处罚金额相当于今天的5英镑或8美元”。 到18世纪,tap-too beate(吹号)逐渐演变为beat tattoo,在现实生活中可泛指一切“连续而均匀地击鼓或轻叩声”,如:He beat a tattoo with his fingers on the table-top.(他用手指轻轻敲着桌面。) Tattoo的另一用法“纹身”,源于英国航海探险家James Cook(詹姆斯·库克)船长,他在1769年的日志中,用“Tattow”一词来形容南太平洋土著居民在身上刺涂花纹的习俗。随着时间的推移,在皮肤上刺花纹已成为当今的流行时尚,而当时的土著词汇Tattow也逐渐被人们改写为tattoo。
