Pipe dream: 白日梦
知不知道“烟斗”怎么说？很简单，仅用一个pipe就可形容这种“一头带有小吹嘴的管状抽烟用具”。当然，谈起pipe（烟斗），免不了会想到19世纪提着烟袋吸食鸦片的烟鬼们。短语pipe dream（白日梦）还真得从烟鬼们腾云驾雾的“感觉”谈起。 在18、19世纪的英国，上流社会吸食鸦片并不罕见。据说，英国湖畔诗人Samuel Taylor Coleridge（塞谬尔·柯勒律治）就是在鸦片的作用下，创作出了流传后世的诗作Kubla Kahn（《忽必烈汗》），只可惜诗中的元大都与实际都城相差十万八千里远。 在当时，pipe（烟斗）常被引申为“鸦片”，如短语on the pipe 就很形象地形容了以“鸦片”为生的瘾君子，而pipe dream则用来比喻鸦片上瘾者陷入幻觉时的状态。大约在1895年左右，pipe dream正式进入英语词汇，不过在书面语中，pipe dream不再与鸦片有任何瓜葛，而是用来形容“白日梦，幻想，空想”。看下面一个例句： Her plans for a movie career had all been a pipe dream.（她计划进入影视圈只是痴心妄想。）
