Sundae: “圣代”冰激凌
记得第一次在肯德基吃“圣代”,就和朋友讨论了一番,大家都很好奇为什么这种加了碎果仁和红樱桃的奶油冰淇淋取名为“圣代”。更蹊跷的是,它的英文名sundae的读音和拼写又和Sunday非常相似,这个“圣代”到底从哪来的呢?
“圣代”的故乡在美国,早在1897年,美国人就吃上了“圣代”冰激凌。据说“圣代”冰激凌是威斯康辛的一个名叫乔治的冰激凌店主发明的,乔治标新立异,把樱桃糖浆浇在冰淇凌上,并放上一颗糖腌樱桃卖给顾客。一开始,这种混合冰激凌只在星期天有卖,后来人们觉得这种冰激凌非常好吃,需求量越来越大,于是乔治就每天向人们供应这种冰激凌。由于这种冰激凌最初是在星期天售卖的,所以店主就给它取名为Sunday。 可星期日是耶酥的安息日(Sabbath),教会认为用这一天作商品名是对神明的亵渎。于是,Sunday只好改称Sundae,一直沿用至今。为了避开禁忌,Sunday冰激凌还曾用过一些其它的名字,如sundi,sondhi。 “圣代”家族的成员不少,有巧克力圣代(chocolate sundae)、菠萝圣代(pineapple sundae)、什锦水果圣代(mixed fruit sundae)等等。
