On the line 岌岌可危

街角的咖啡店生意惨淡，很少有人光顾，这样下去说不定就要关门了。这种情况用一个美国习惯用语来说就是，her business is on the line。To be on the line这个习惯用语的意思是处于危险状态，通常是指生意或婚姻、或者指一个人的名誉有被损坏的危险等。

下面我们来看一个例句，这是一位政界人士被控受贿，前景可危。

例句-1：We should hear more evidence over the next few days. Meanwhile, Mr. Wilson has to be very nervous. His reputation and indeed his position are on the line. Unless Mr. Wilson is completely cleared of the accusation, he is sure to lose the election.

今后几天里我们会听到更多的证据。威尔逊先生现在一定非常紧张。他的名誉和地位都岌岌可危了。除非他能证明对他的指控都是不实之词，否则他肯定会落选。

To be on the line这个习惯用语是19世纪开始流行的，最初是指战争的前线，那里有遭到炮火袭击的危险。后来，on the line的意思有所扩大，可以指其他的危险或风险。

我们再来看一个电视连续剧里的例子，男主人公Frasier的弟弟虽然已经结婚成家，却爱上了一个有夫之妇，但是他不知道对方是否也钟情于他。Frasier看到弟弟的情况，很想替他们俩人传情，可是又怕破坏双方的家庭。我们来看看他爸爸是怎么看的：

例句-2：Listen Frasier, you'd better not get involved unless you are absolutely sure that they'll be happier this way. Don't forget there are two marriages on the line here, and you could ruin them both.

听着，弗雷泽，你最好不要参与这件事，除非你十分肯定他们相爱会让他们更幸福。别忘了这样会使两对夫妇的婚姻都处于危险的境地，你有可能把它们都毁了啊。
