一、alone的用法http://yingyu.chazidian.com
1. 独自的; 单独的(without any other people)
(1) 作表语。例如：
She was alone in that large house. 她独自一人呆在那所大房子里。
Tom is not alone in finding Rick hard to work with. 并不只是汤姆一人认为和里克难以共事。
(2) 作宾语补足语。例如：
Suddenly they found themselves alone together in the room. 突然，他们发现屋子里只剩下他们两个。
2. 无依无靠；孤独；寂寞( lonely and unhappy or without friends)
作表语。例如：
I’ve been so alone since you went away. 你走了以后我一直很寂寞。
He felt terribly alone when June left. 琼走后，他感到非常孤独。
It was scary being all alone in a strange city. (all alone=completely)独自一人身处陌生的城市真令人害怕
3. (用于名词或代词后)唯一；只有(used after a noun or pronoun to show the person or thing mentioned is the only one)
作后置定语。例如：
Of all the applicants, she alone had the right qualifications. 在所有的申请人，只有她符合条件。
4. (用于名词或代词后以加强语气)仅仅；单；只(used after a noun or pronoun to emphasize one particular thing)
作后置定语。例如：
The price alone was enough to put me off the idea. 单是价格就让我打消了这个念头。
二、alone的搭配
1. be / feel / sit / stand alone。例如：
These islands are too small to stand alone as independent states. 这些岛屿太小了，无法单独作为独立的国家。
2. leave sb / let sb alone。例如：
Don't touch me! Leave me alone! 不要碰我！让我一个人待会儿。
3. very much alone例如：
I felt vulnerable and very much alone. 我感到非常孤独和脆弱。
注：现代英语中，very 也可修饰alone。
4. all / completely / entirely / quite alone。例如：
Carol felt all alone in the world. 在世界上卡罗尔感到非常孤独。
5. alone together。例如：
Finally the two of us were alone together. 最后，我们两个人单独在一起。
6. alone with。例如：
She did not want to be alone with him. 她不想与他单独在一起。
7. be alone in doing sth 只一个人做…… 例如：
You are not alone in worrying about the problem. 不只是你一个人在为这个问题担心。
三、辨析
1. only, single, sole, unique, alone
这些形容词均可表示“唯一的”之意。
only 普通用词，常可与sole换用，但侧重仅限于指定的人或物，而不需要更多。
single 语气较强，强调仅此一个，再无第二个。
sole 语气强于only，指仅有一个或一群，只考虑这一个或这一群。
unique 非正式用词，侧重在一类中唯一无可匹敌、无与伦比的特。
alone 着重专指某人或某物，而不是别的。通常作后置定语。
2. alone, lonely, lonesome, lone，solitary
这些形容词在表示缺少伙伴这个意思时可进行比较。
(1) alone 表示客观上“没别人和你在一起，既无褒义也无贬义。”强调不和他人在一起但并不意味不快乐。通常作表语和宾语补足语。例如：
“I am never less alone, than when I am alone.” “我从来不比自己独处时更孤独。”
(2) lonely和 lonesome 表示主观上的“孤独”和“寂寞”之意。前者常指痛苦地意识到自己独自一人；后者强调一种伤感的对伙伴的渴望。通常作定语。例如：
‘No doubt they are dead,’ she thought, and felt..sadder and...lonelier for the thought. 毫无疑问他们都死了，她越想越感到伤心和孤单。
“You must keep up your spirits, mother, and not be lonesome because I'm not at home.” “你一定要振作精神，妈妈，不要因为我不在家就感到孤单。”
lonely和 lonesome 也可用于修饰地点等，表示让人“感到寂寞的” 。例如：
a lonesome little town on the prairie 草原上一个人迹罕至的小镇(http://yingyu.chazidian.com)
(3) lone和solitary 修饰人或事物时，指该人或事物是某个地点唯一的一个，因此会显得寂寞。例如：
a lone figure in the middle of the square 广场中央孤零零的一个人
solitary常包含lonely 和 lonesome两个词的意思，指喜欢独处的。例如：
She thoroughly enjoyed her solitary dinner. 她非常喜欢独自吃的那顿饭。
注：不要过分夸大alone 和lonely的区别。
