一、agog 的用法http://yingyu.chazidian.com
基本义：渴望的；急切的；兴奋的；激动的 (eager; excited)
■作表语
agog to do sth. 渴望做某事。例如：
All London was agog to see the two “parents”of radium. 伦敦全城都渴望见到这两位镭的“父母”。
■作宾语补足语
That set the whole town agog with excitement. 那件事使全镇的居民兴奋不已。
The prospect of Christmas left the children agog. 对圣诞节的憧憬使得孩子们兴奋不已。
■作状语
She arrived, agog, to discover what had prevented him being there. 她一到，便急着要弄明白他为什么没有去那儿。
二、agog 的搭配
1. all [有时more] agog。例如：
The voters were all agog to see their new president. 选民们急不可耐，要看他们的新总统。
They were even more agog during the much publicized Banana Dance when she danced with only a curtain of bananas round her waist.在广为宣传香蕉的舞会上，当她腰部只围着一圈香蕉跳舞时，他们感到更加兴奋。
注：杨发河著《英语形容词句型活用指南》(江西高校出版社1992年12月第1版)p16：agog前不用very，如不说very agog，而说much[very much] agog。

在BYU: THE OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY(http://corpus.byu/oed/)上共有29例包含 agog 的例句，竟无1例much[very much] agog；
在TIME CORPUS OF AMERICAN ENGLISH (1923-2006) (Mark Davies, Brigham Young University ) (http://corpus.byu.edu/time) 上共有111例包含 agog 的例句，竟无1例much[very much] agog；
在BUY CORPUS OF AMERICAN ENGLISH (1990-2008) (Mark Davies, Brigham Young University) http://www.americancorpus.org/上共有84例包含 agog 的例句，竟无1例much[very much] agog。
由此看来，尽管语法专家根据语法理论认为much或very much可以修饰agog，但实际上，无论英国英语还是美国英语都不用much或very much修饰agog，而是通常用all 来修饰agog。
2. agog at sth.。例如：
He was all agog at the surprise announcement. 他听到那突如其来的宣布, 大为激动。
3. agog for sth.。例如：
The villagers were agog for the news. 村民们很兴奋地急于听那消息。
4. agog with sth.。例如：
The children were all agog with excitement at going to the seaside for summer holidays. 孩子们都兴奋地渴望看去海滨过暑假。
5. agog over sth.。例如：
She was all agog over her new granddaughter. 得知孙女刚刚出生，她激动万分。
6. agog about sth.。例如：
In Britain commentators and policy makers are agog about a new U.S. doctrine, unveiled by President George W. Bush in a commencement address at West Point. 在英国，时事评论员和政策制定者都对美国的新国际关系原则感到兴奋，那是美国总统乔治·W·布什在西点军校的毕业典礼讲话中披露的。

三、agog 的辨析
■agog, eager, anxious, enthusiastic, keen
以上形容词都表示对未来的行动或事物表现出极大的兴趣和向往，并积极地准备投入之中。其中：
1. agog 常和with 连用，表示非常激动地或迫不及待地期望着某件事情发生，多用于口语或非正式场合。
2. eager 渴望，盼望，多指对各种各样地阅历或经验进行亲身体会的渴望，有时也指对某一特殊事物所产生的极浓厚的兴趣，作此解时，大多含有迫不及待的意思。例如：
I am eager for you to see my new car. 我渴望你来看我的新车。
He is eager for news. 他迫切想得到消息。
3. anxious 一般与for或 about连用，多表示对某种不幸、痛苦或危险等的焦虑或担心。例如：
She was anxious for the health of her husband. 她为丈夫的健康担忧。
另外，当anxious表示迫切希望做某事时，一般接to do或 for，多用于口语或非正式场合，正式场合一般用eager。例如：
He was anxious for his brother to meet you. 他急切地让他的弟弟去见你。
4. enthusiastic更多地带有一种积极参与的意思，即表示兴致勃勃地参加自己所喜欢或热衷的某项活动。例如：
They were not enthusiastic about competitions. 他们不热衷于比赛。
5. keen 一般与on连用，多用于口语或非正式场合，表示对某人或某物有着一种强烈的喜好或兴趣，有时也表示迫切想做某事。例如：
Mrs Hill is keen on Tom's marrying Susan. 希尔太太很希望汤姆能和苏珊结婚。
