homely enough to fade a carpet: 指某人非常的普通，不引人注目，可以融合在周围的坏境中毫不显眼。
apparently: 显然地；似乎，表面上。
promise: 答应，允诺。
plain: 不美的；(相貌)平常的；不好看的。
