“裸字本来就是个常用词，其意思是“露出、“没有遮盖的意思，英文是naked。“赤裸裸往往用于比喻，如“赤裸裸的骗子，英语说a seindler thorough and thorough。汉语“赤膊（俗称“光膀子），英语是bare to the waist或stripped to the waist。
西方的嬉皮士喜欢“裸奔（dash naked，英语里还有一个专门的词streak）、“裸泳（有趣的是，英文一般说swim raw，raw本来的意思是“生的、“没有煮熟的）。一个比较新的词汇是“裸检，此词译自英语的full-body scanning，起因是2009年12月一名尼日利亚男子搭乘美国西北航空公司一架班机企图炸机未遂。为此美国民航采用全身扫描系统进行安检，扫描使用的无线电波能够穿透衣服，批评者将此类安检称为virtual strip search（虚拟裸体搜查）。
