近期，南非世界杯的激战的同时，网络赌球案却也在暗处轮番上演。7月8日，公安部通报：截至7月5日，各地公安机关在世界杯足球赛期间共打掉网络赌球团伙600余个。随着一批大案、要案的侦破，网络赌球的黑幕也被渐次揭开。

据报道，在另一起案件中，香港和大陆警方端掉了一个大型跨境非法赌球集团，缴获了价值超过10亿美元的投注单。
文中的betting slips就是“投注单，即用于辅助投注的专用表格，常打有投注金额。此次各地公安机关查获了多起online soccer gambling（网络赌球），通过gambling websites（赌博网站）进行操作。还有一些赌徒通过电话进行投注，被称为telephone bets。参与赌博的人或公司也称为bookies，比如underground soccer betting bookies（地下赌球公司）。由于赌博比买彩票的return rates（收益率、回报率）要高，因此成为很多人的首选。
Slip原意是指“纸条、便条。公司在送出礼品时常在上面贴上标有公司名称的compliments slip（赠礼便条，礼帖），老板解雇员工时会给他发送pink slip（解雇通知），所以失业一族的聚会就被称为pink-slip party（失业聚会）。
