CATANIA, Italy, Oct. 11 -- An expected epic turned out to be a clinic as veteran Valentina Vezzali routed Elisa Di Francisca 14-6 to win her sixth individual World Championships title in the all-Italian final of the women's foil on Tuesday.
The 37-year-old triple Olympic champion raced to a 5-0 lead over Di Francisca, the top-ranked fencer and defending champion, and never looked back as she made an easy work of the expectedly tough final.
This is Vezzali's first World Championships title since 2007.
In the men's sabre final, Luigi Trantino of Italy beat German Nicolas Limbach 15-13 to win the second gold for the hosts.
