RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 2 -- In his return to Sao Paulo after a seven-year play in Europe, Luis Fabiano made his long awaited debut on Sunday in the 27th round of the 2011 Brazilian Championship.
However, Flamengo won in the Morumbi stadium by the score of 2-1.
Luis "Fabulous" Fabiano made his return to Sao Paulo in March this year after his release from Spain's Sevilla. Upon his return to Brazil, the 30-year-old striker was submitted to surgery on his right leg, amounting to what would be a near-six month recovery.
The player's return was highly celebrated by the more than 60,000 fans that filled the Morumbi stadium despite the constant downpour of rain. However, the fans were disappointed by the score of 2-1 in favor of Flamengo.
Fans heavily booed Sao Paulo's head coach Adilson Batista upon Luis Fabiano' s substitution in the second half. However, the move was pre-scheduled and already expected.
Fabiano decided to show his solidarity with the coach and declare his admiration for Batista, saying that the experienced coach is the right man to lead Sao Paulo. The striker added that he was not physically prepared to play the entire match and that his substitution was already planned.
Luis Fabiano expressed his readiness to return to the field on October 5 when Sao Paulo travels to face Cruzeiro. The player hopes to slowly but surely return to play the entire 90 minutes and help his team to win this year's competition.
