WELLINGTON, Oct. 2 -- England fought for a 16-12 comeback against old rivals Scotland after the Scots got off to a surprise early lead in their Pool B match of the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand on Saturday.
Dan Parks made a valuable contribution to Scotland's early success when he came on to the Eden Park pitch after four minutes to replace injured fly half Ruaridh Jackson.
Full back Paterson put the Scots ahead four minutes later after Dan Cole was penalized during a scrum.
England conceded an eighth penalty after 15 minutes Parks extended the lead by another three points, after taking a shot from 10 metres inside the English half.
An 18th minute penalty kick by Jonny Wilkinson drifted left and another Wilkinson kick fell short three minutes later.
Wilkinson's boot continued to fail him almost immediately after when Scotland were penalized at the breakdown and he missed again.
He finally made good when the Scots incurred a fourth penalty for going in at the side, getting his team on the board.
But the Scots reclaimed their six-point lead when Parks slotted through a drop goal before the break.
After the break, Paterson extended the Scots' lead with a 54th-minute scrum penalty, but Wilkinson put through a drop goal and penalty for England before Ashton's converted try sealed his side's victory.
Scotland's hopes of progressing to the quarter finals suffered a blow when winger Chris Ashton took a long pass from Toby Flood to put it down over the corner.
Flood converted from the touchline to give England the win.
