BERLIN, July 10 -- Sweden ousted Australia from competition as midfielder Therese Sjoegran and Lisa Dahlkvist smoothed the victory with early goals to stun "Matildas" in front of 24,605 spectators at Impuls Arena on Sunday.
Sweden dominated from the start and midfielder Therese Sjoegran opened the scoring with only eleven minutes into the match when she had enough space to slot home into bottom left.
Only five minutes later midfielder Lisa Dahlkvist doubled the lead for Sweden when she headed home a cross from inside penalty area.
Sweden retracted with the lead so that Australia defender Ellyse Perry was able to close the score five minutes before break.
With the start of the second half Australia pressed for the equalizer while Sweden lurked for counter attacks but at the 52nd minute striker Lotta Schelin capitalized on an error by Australia's defence that staged a poor return pass to give Schelin the golden chance to mark the final 3-1 score.
Sweden will face Japan at the semifinal in Frankfurt on Wednesday evening.
