WIMBLEDON, England, June 22 -- Second-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia advanced into the third round at Wimbledon on Wednesday, upsetting her compatriot Elena Vesnina 6-1, 7-6 (5).
Zvonareva, 26, was beaten by Serena Williams here in her first Grand Slam final appearance 12 months ago and the second seed looks capable of another long run at the All England Club.
Next round for the Russian is Bulgarian 32nd seed Tsvetana Pironkova, a surprise semifinalist last year.
The 2010 Wimbledon runner-up improved her record to 6-1 against Vesnina, with her only loss coming last year when she retired with an ankle injury.
