THE HAGUE, May 23 -- Ajax signed Theo Janssen from FC Twente on Monday after the 29-year-old midfielder agreed a contract for two years with an option for one more year.
Janssen's contract at Twente expired in 2017 and Ajax was prepared to pay the transfer fee of 3.2 million euros. He had moved from Vitesse Arnhem to Twente in 2008 and became Dutch champion with the Enschede side in the 2009/2010 season.
This season Twente won the Dutch Cup after beating Ajax, but lost the first place in the Dutch league in the final match round after losing to Ajax.
Janssen had played 46 official matches this season, in which he scored 20 goals.
Janssen explained his reasons for the transfer on the Ajax website: "Ajax became champions and will play in the Champions League next season. It soon became clear to me that I wanted to come here. And the coach (Frank de Boer) likes to have me."
The Dutch international will make his debut for his new club on July 30 against Twente in the Dutch Super Cup. "That's very special," he said. "I am looking forward to it. I hope at that time everyone can see that I made the right choice."
