RIO DE JANEIRO, May 25 -- Flamengo midfielder Willians was suspended after he intentionally elbowed teammate Negueba in a team scrimmage on Wednesday.
The incident took place during Flamengo's training ahead of its upcoming second round match in the Brazilian Championship against Bahia.
Willians apparently swung his elbow at Negueba after the striker dribbled around him. Negueba immediately dropped to the ground in extreme pain and had to be helped off the field.
Head coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo immediately scolded Willians for his unnecessary violence. The midfielder was suspended from the team's match on the road on May 28 against Bahia.
Luxemburgo plans to meet with club president Patricia Amorim to discuss if further disciplinary actions should be taken.
Willians is expected to be fined. However, the amount was not disclosed.
Luxemburgo will now study the options of Fernando and Muralha as possible substitutes for Willians.
