LONDON, Feb. 23 -- Manchester City got a morale boosting away win ahead of their Champions League visit to Real Madrid, while Chelsea ruined Jose Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge on another weekend where the VAR was the center of attention in the Premier League.

Gabriel Jesus' goal showed that Manchester City are still very much alive and kicking after their two-year Champions League ban as he scored the goal to give Pep Guardiola's side a 1-0 win away to Leicester City.

The Brazilian's goal came after Kun Aguero had missed a penalty for City, who have now failed to take advantage of their last four penalty kicks.

The weekend kicked off with Frank Lampard's Chelsea returning to winning ways with a 2-1 win at home to Jose Mourinho's Tottenham.

Olivier Giroud and Marcos Alonso scored for Chelsea against Tottenham, who are struggling in front of goal without the injured Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son and Spurs' late consolation goal was when Chelsea defended Rudiger put the ball into his own net a minute from time after deflecting a shot from Eric Lamela.

The main talking point of the game was the failure of the VAR to send off Giovani Lo Celso after a stamp on Chelsea's Cesar Azpilicueta. The VAR offices at Stockley Park later issued a communique citing 'human error' for the error.

"That is what the VAR was brought in to stop. It's just not good enough," complained Chelsea coach Frank Lampard after the game.

Manchester United enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 win at home to struggling Watford on Sunday to strengthen their chances of a place in next season's Champions League.

Recent arrival Bruno Fernandes had an excellent game and opened the scoring from the penalty spot after he had been fouled by Ben Foster.

Watford had a goal ruled out by the VAR for a prior handball, before Anthony Martial continued his run of form with a goal in the 58th minute and Mason Greenwood made it 3-0 with 15 minutes left to go.

Wolves are also in with a chance of Champions League football after two goals from Diogo Jota and one from Raul Jimenez gave them a straightforward win at home to bottom of the table Norwich City.

However, Sheffield United's hopes of a top five finish suffered a blow when they were held 1-1 at home to Brighton, who took a much-needed point after Neil Maupay cancelled out Edna Stevens' thunderbolt, which had opened the scoring for 'The Blades.'

Patrick Van Arnholt's free kick gave Crystal Palace a 1-0 win at home to Newcastle - their first win since December 26th, while Southampton won 2-0 at home to Aston Villa with goals from Shane Long and Stuart Armstrong.

Arsenal won a five-goal thriller at home to Everton, who had opened the scoring through Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the first minute of the game.

Eddie Nketiah equalized after 27 minute and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put Arsenal ahead and although Richarlison drew level on the stroke of halftime, Aubameyang's second goal of the game at the start of the second half decided the game.

There was further VAR controversy in Burnley's 3-0 win over Bournemouth after Bournemouth saw two goals ruled out. The first was for a debatable handball decision and after Matej Vydra had put Burnley ahead, the visitors saw a what they thought was the equalizer ruled out after the VAR spotted a handball in their penalty area at the start of the move.

Jay Rodriguez slotted home the spot-kick and rather than being 1-1, Bournemouth were 2-0 down with no way back into the game and Dwight McNeil made it 3-0 with three minutes to go.

League leaders Liverpool entertain struggling West Ham on Monday night.
