RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 13 -- Former Brazil and Real Madrid manager Vanderlei Luxemburgo has parted ways with Vasco da Gama after less than eight months in the role.

The 67-year-old confirmed his departure in a social media post on Friday, accusing Vasco's hierarchy of failing to match his ambition.

"I know of Vasco's financial difficulties and I made a proposal that I understood to be within the capability of the club," Luxemburgo said.

"I'm ambitious and allow myself to think big. I always aim to win titles, which makes me think of the big picture, so I prefer to leave."

Vasco president Alexandre Campello later told reporters that he was unable to meet the veteran manager's salary and squad demands.

The announcement came five days after the completion of the Brazilian Serie A season, in which Vasco finished 12th in the 20-team standings. The Rio de Janeiro outfit was languishing in the relegation zone when the veteran manager was appointed in May.

Luxemburgo is the most successful manager in the history of Brazilian domestic football with five Serie A titles. He was Brazil's national team boss from 1998 to 2000 and had an 11-month spell in charge of Real Madrid in 2005.
