Spain's fourth seed Albert Ramos Vinolas also progressed to the next round of the ATP 500 clay court event by defeating Brazilian Rogerio Dutra Silva 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Spaniard Fernando Verdasco was another who needed three sets to advance, beating Argentina's Leonardo Mayer 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 at the Jockey Club Brasileiro.
