FOSSURMER, France, June 3 -- The Turkish U-20 team reached the semifinals of the Toulon Tournament with a 2-1 victory over Portugal on Sunday. Turkey's Baris Alici delivered an early strike in the third minute of the first half. 22 minutes later, Turkey's Kubilay Kanatsizkus hit the back of the net.
The Portuguese U-19 team converted a penalty in the 66th minute, but they were eliminated from the tournament after one draw and two losses in group play.
In the other group game, Canada gained an early lead in the ninth minute but the Japanese U-21 team found an equalizer in the 65th minute. The draw placed Canada second in the group with one victory and two draws, followed by Japan, who had one victory, one draw and one loss.
The Toulon Tournament has 12 teams drawn into three groups of four. The group winners, including Mexico, Scotland and Turkey, and the best second-placed team, England, have qualified for the semifinals.
