Brazil international forward Luan gave the hosts the lead with a fourth-minute strike before Rony da Silva equalized with a powerful finish just after halftime.
Thaciano restored the hosts' advantage after latching onto Rafael Galhardo's cross with a low shot past goalkeeper Aderbar Santos.
The result marked Gremio's first victory in Brazil's top flight since their 2-1 defeat of Vasco da Gama on July 13.
The Porto Alegre outfit are now 11th in the 20-team Serie A standings with 21 points from 16 matches, a point behind ninth-placed Athletico Paranaense.
In Saturday's only other match, Bahia won 1-0 at Atletico Mineiro.
