Legend has it that back in the day, when people waited, they learned the real meaning of the word patience. The reason? Smartphones weren't invented yet!
听说很久很久以前,当我们等人的时候,我们会领悟“耐心”这个词的真谛。为什么?因为那个时候智能手机还没有诞生呗!
Here are 21 things we used to do -- pre-smartphone -- when we were stuck waiting in line, for a movie to start or for the food to come.
下面是我们过去常常会做的21件事——在“前智能手机时代”——当我们在电影院门口或餐厅里排着队等着买电影票、等着买吃的的时候。
1. Smile politely at other people in the same situation.
给处境相同的人一个礼貌的微笑。
2. Read the newspaper you were carrying under your arm (no, seriously).
拿出夹在胳膊下的报纸来读。(说真的哦!)
3. Pay too much attention to other people's conversations.
过于注意别人的谈话。
4. Watch the rain (or snow) attentively.
专注的看窗外下雨(或下雪)。
5. Read shampoo bottles, or anything else with words, in the bathroom.
去洗手间读洗手液瓶子上的标签,或任何上面有字的东西。
6. Tap your fingers on the table just so.
跟这货一样用手指敲桌子。
7. Or move your leg like this.
像这样暴走。
8. Keep folding whatever paper is in your pocket until it won’t fold anymore… or try your hand at origami.
从口袋里掏出一张随便什么纸,不停的对折,或者掰自己的手指。
9. Pace back and forth.
来回踱步。
10. Update your agenda or write… on paper.
思考今天的新日程表,或者写下今天的日程表……用纸写!
11. Smile all the time to show everyone what a great time you’re having.
对每个人微笑并保持微笑,假装自得其乐。
12. Make eye contact with people in the same situation.
和处境相同的人对视。
13. Meet a stranger.
跟陌生人打招呼。
14. Look compulsively at your watch.
像强迫症患者一样不停看表。
15. Look forward to seeing your friends to tell them what you’d been doing.
想着等会儿小伙伴来了,要告诉他们你在等的时候干了些什么。
16. Live on the edge, never knowing when the other person was going to arrive (remember: there were NO cell phones to call to check in or receive a cancellation)
惶惶不安,不知道对方到底什么时候才到。(记住:那个时候没有手机,没办法确认对方到达的时间,也没办法知道对方不来了。)
17. Get sick of wondering where everyone else is.
抓狂大家其他人到底去哪儿了。
18. Experience the meaning of the word patience.
体味“耐心”这个词的真谛。
19. Do nothing was always an option.
什么都不做也是选择之一。
20. Decide to think for a while.
决定沉思一下。
21. But, of course, just try explaining this to kids these days…
