GWANGJU, July 12 -- Chinese 17-year-old starlet Wang Zongyuan dominated the men's one-meter springboard heat here in FINA World Championships.
Wang Zongyuan nailed a total of 429.40 points to edge off reigning champion Peng Jianfeng by 18.60 points from the top place of preliminary round. Woo Haram from South Korea followed at 396.10 points.
"This is my first world championships so I am nervous, even now, taking my first-ever interview," said Wang Zongyuan after the match.
Training from six years old, Wang said he improved a lot in recent two years since he was selected from provincial team into the national team.
"I really want to say thank you to my coach Nie Yudi," said Wang, "Not only my skills but also the psychology part of me. So I can be calm and in control today."
"I think I need to just focus on myself, on every movement, just like what I did today." He said about the final on Sunday.
