BERLIN, June 30 -- American midfielder Weston McKennie has extended his running contract with Schalke 04 ahead of schedule, the "Royal Blues" announced in an official statement on Sunday.
The 20-year-old will stay with the German Bundesliga side until June 2024 after extending his current contract for two years.
"The decision was very easy for me because I was constantly allowed to enjoy the incredible large support of the fans. Those responsible also stand always behind me. I am looking forward to everything that comes," McKennie told the club's official homepage.
The U.S. international joined Schalke's youth team in 2016 before his performances ensured him a place in the senior team in May 2017. He made ever since 59 appearances and scored twice.
Schalke completed the past season on the 14th of the standings hence they have not qualified for a competition in Europe.
