MILAN, Dec. 11 -- Inter Milan failed on their attempt to make into the last 16 in UEFA Champions League after a 1-1 draw against PSV Eindhoven here on Tuesday.
Inter needed to better Tottenham Hotspur's result in the final group match, as the latter had advantage on head-to-head away goals in hand.
Inter saw their first attempt close to goal six minutes into the match, but Ivan Perisic's header on Mauro Icardi's cross was brilliantly parried by goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet off the post.
At the other end of the pitch, however, a clumsy clearance by Inter defender Kwadwo Asamoah led to their opponents' deadlock-breaking goal.
Steven Bergwijn intercepted the ball from Asamoah before guiding a header from Hirving Lozano into the net in the 13th minute.
Inter wasted a series of chances for most part through the match. Bergwijn forced a great save from Zoet's counterpart Samir Handanovic with his powerful shot outside the box in the 39th minute.
After saving several shots, Zoet could not stop captain Icardi's header at the back post in the 73rd minute.
However, the goal was not enough to guarantee Inter a spot in round of 16, as Hotspur earned their point in a 1-1 tie with Barcelona through Lucas Moura's late equalizer.
Both Hotspur and Inter have snatched eight points from six matches, but the away goal in Hotspur's 2-1 loss at Inter proves decisive on who can advance to the knockout stage.
Hotspur join group winner Barcelona in round of 16, while Inter will contend for Europa League glory.
