RIO DE JANEIRO, June 2 -- A rare goal from former Brazil international right back Marcos Rocha handed Palmeiras a 2-1 win at Chapecoense on Sunday as the defending champions remained top of the Brazilian Serie A standings.
Rocha capitalized on a bungled clearance by hitting the target with a long-range volley on the stroke of halftime at Conde Arena. It was just his 13th goal in more than 200 Serie A appearances.
Chapecoense's Everaldo Stum had earlier equalized from the penalty spot after Dudu's opener.
The result left Luiz Felipe Scolari's Palmeiras with 16 points from six matches, one point ahead of second-placed Atletico Mineiro and with a game in hand.
In other matches on Sunday, Botafogo won 1-0 at home to Vasco da Gama, Santos won 1-0 at Ceara, Athletico Paranaense beat Fluminense 3-0 at home, Cruzeiro drew 1-1 at Sao Paulo, Atletico Mineiro won 4-0 at home to CSA and Internacional defeated Avai 2-0 in Porto Alegre.
