PARIS, Oct. 21 -- Morgan Sanson's goal gifted Marseille a 1-0 narrow victory at Nice, while Montpellier took advantage of a 2-0 win over Bordeaux to move up to third at the Ligue 1 table on Sunday.
Without injured top scorer Florian Thuavin as well as the suspended Luiz Gustavo and Lucas Ocampos, Marseille managed to open the scoring late in the first half. Sanson collected a cut-back from Bouna Sarr and got rid of a defender, before firing a low shot into the net in the 42nd minute.
Nice searched for an equalizer in the second half, but their efforts turned out to be in vain.
However, Marseille failed to reclaim the third position where they sat prior to the 10th round action, as Montpellier went ahead in goal difference with both sides tallying 19 points from 10 matches.
Gaetan Laborde found the net against his former club for Montpellier in the 17th minute. Bordeaux were penalized a spot kick after Pablo stopped a Andy Delort cross with his hands, and then Delort converted the penalty for his fourth league goal in the 53rd minute.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Saint-Etienne tied Rennes 1-1 at home.
Runaway leaders Paris Saint-Germain extended their best start in the French top-flight league to 10 victories in a row after battering Amiens 5-0 on Saturday.
Former France great Thierry Henry suffered a miserable debut after taking in charge of Monaco with a 2-1 loss at Strasbourg, seeing the team slide into relegation zone.
